SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State Athletics mourns the passing for former football Hall of Fame player, coach and lifelong supporter Gary Quattrin who passed away on July 2 at the age of 81 in Rocklin, Calif.

"It is hard to find anyone that embodied being a Sacramento State Hornet more than Gary Quattrin," Sacramento State Director of Athletics Mark Orr said. "Gary served the University in numerous ways for over 60 years and will be dearly missed. Our condolenes are with Judy and his family during this difficult time."

Quattrin began his association with the Hornets when he arrived on campus in 1962. He was a two-time all-Far Western Conference selection and was named to the College Division All-America team his senior season as a linebacker. As a senior in 1963, Quattrin was named the team MVP and earned the Sacramento State Outstanding Athlete Award for the 1963-64 academic year.

The Watsonville, Calif., native was also a member of the Sacramento State baseball team during the 1963 season and later served as a student assistant to Hall of Fame head coach Cal Boyes.

Following his collegiate career, Quattrin played professionally with the Indianapolis Warriors of the Continental Football League and later joined the Washington Redskins of the NFL in 1966. He was a member of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League the following season.

Quattrin made a quick transition from player to coach, returning to Sacramento State as an assistant coach in 1968 and remaining on staff under Ray Clemons through the 1972 season. Quattrin later returned to the Hornet sidelines in 1985 and 1986 as an assistant to his former teammate Bob Mattos.

Between his coaching stints, Quattrin obtained his law degree and eventually became partner at Quattrin, Johnson, Campora and England until retiring in 2004. He also remained active at Sacramento State, helping found the Hornet Stinger Foundation, serving as President of the Sacramento State Alumni Association and as an instructor in Continuing Education Classes in real estate law and real estate syndication. Gary was also a member of the Sacramento State Athletic Advisory Board and was on the board of directors for the University Foundation. In 2015, Quattrin was awarded the President's Medal for Distinguished Service to the University. In 2019, the Sacramento State Alumni Association awarded Gary and Judy Quattrin the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Gary is survived by his wife of 55 years, Judy, their daughters Michele (Chris Powell) and Andrea (Chris Schwarze) and six grandchildren.

A Catholic funeral mass will be celebrated on July 18, 2024, 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Marello, Granite Bay, Calif.; immediately followed by a private burial; reception 1-4 p.m., Granite Bay Golf Club.
