SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State won its fifth straight, and sits all alone in first place in the Big Sky Conference standings, after a 6-1 victory over Portland State on Saturday afternoon.
Not only have the Hornets (13-5, 5-1) won five straight, they've also won eight of their last nine matches. With just two Big Sky contests left in the regular season, Sacramento State sits in first place in the conference standings with its 5-1 record. Northern Arizona is second at 3-1.
Today marked Senior Day and the final home match of the season. Sacramento State improved to 9-1 at home, and saw four of its seniors post singles victories this afternoon. The Hornets honored their six seniors -
Mark Keki,
Mate Voros,
Jan Silva,
Jiri Novak,
Rudolfs Aksenoks,
Michael Gravel - a group that has combined for a 132-64 career dual singles record, and 150-61 in doubles.
The Hornets have just three matches left in the regular season before the Big Sky Tournament begins in Phoenix April 25-27. Sacramento State has won four straight Big Sky matches, and will complete its conference slate next week on Friday at Idaho and Sunday at Eastern Washington.
The Hornets' 13 overall wins are the program's most since the 2017 team went 13-12. With one more win, Sacramento State would get to 14 victories for the first time since the 2013 team finished at 17-13.
Today, the Hornets received singles wins from Keki (No. 1), Voros (No. 2), Silva (No. 3),
Adam Chodur (No. 4) and Aksenoks (No. 6). Both Keki and Aksenoks improved their singles winning streak to eight straight while Silva has won five straight, and Voros four straight.
Sacramento State won the doubles point after receiving wins at No. 1 (Keki/Voros) and No. 2 (Chodur/
Hayden Rand).
"Today was a great Senior Day, and we enjoyed celebrating this group that has worked so hard," Sacramento State head coach
Kevin Kurtz said. "This is one of the best senior classes in program history, and their records speak for themselves. The coaching staff and the entire program are extremely proud of them, and we look forward to the rest of the regular season and postseason."
The Hornets' next match will take place Friday at Idaho. First serve is 4 p.m.
