SOFTBALL COMPLETES 3-GAME SWEEP OF MONTANA, SETS SIGHTS ON THE BIG SKY TOURNAMENT

SACRAMENTO -- Marissa Bertuccio threw six no-hit innings, and the Hornets scored three times in the first two innings as Sacramento State defeated Montana, 3-0, in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium.

The Hornets completed a three-game sweep of Montana, and finish the regular season 26-18 overall and 7-4 in the Big Sky Conference. Sacramento State had four conference games canceled this year because of inclement weather. And though the Hornets cannot win a Big Sky regular season title, they still have a shot at the No. 2 seed and a first round bye at the Big Sky Tournament (May 8-11 in Pocatello).

Should Idaho State and Weber State split their two games tomorrow, the Hornets would secure the No. 2 seed. If one of those teams win both games, Sacramento State would be the No. 3 seed. Idaho State and Weber State were supposed to finish their series today, but rain pushed the games until tomorrow. In fact, one of those games will be resumed in the ninth inning with the score tied as it was shut down Friday night due to darkness.

In today's win, Bertuccio threw the first six innings, allowing no hits and zero walks with five strikeouts. The only two base runners Montana had against Bertuccio reached base via error. Neither of those runners advanced past first base. Bertuccio improved to 13-7 and lowered her ERA to 1.78.

Savannah Wahl, one of the Hornets' two senior pitchers besides Bertuccio, threw the final inning of the Senior Day victory. Wahl allowed a one-out singe in the seventh inning, but that was the only blemish as she struck out a pair of batters to record her second save of the season.

Sacramento State scored twice in the first inning on a Lewa Day RBI-single and Caroline Evans sacrifice fly, and tacked on another in the second on a Malissa George RBI-single. That was all the run support Bertuccio and Wahl would need as the Hornets completed their second shutout of the series.

Day had a remarkable series, finishing 5-for-7 with five runs, three homers, eight RBIs, four walks and an .818 on-base percentage. The three home runs gave her 59 for her career, the new Big Sky Conference record.

Five of the Hornets' first six batters of the lineup all had a hit, comprised of Haley Hanson, Gwen Ludwig, George, Day and Alexis Parish. Day, Parish and George all have four-game hitting streaks.
