DAVIS, Calif. -- Despite singles wins from
Mark Keki and
Adam Chodur, Sacramento State fell on the road at UC Davis, 4-2, on Thursday afternoon at Marya Welch Tennis Center.
The loss snapped the Hornets' seven-match winning streak, the longest for the program since the 2010 season. In addition, the Hornets had their four-match road winning streak halted. Sacramento State, which was playing its final match of the regular season, will enter the Big Sky Conference Tournament with a 15-6 overall record.
The Hornets will not play again until participating in the conference tournament April 25-27 in Phoenix. Sacramento State has already secured at least a share of the Big Sky regular season championship (first since 2013), and will receive a quarterfinal round bye at the three-day single elimination event.
The winner of the Big Sky Tournament receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Hornets will be seeking their first appearance at the NCAA Tournament since 2013.
In today's match, UC Davis won the doubles point with victories at Nos. 1 and 2. The No. 1 duo of Keki/
Mate Voros had won 10 straight matches prior to losing by a 6-3 score today. Sacramento State did get a win at No. 3 from
Jan Silva/Chodur (6-2).
Keki improved his singles winning streak to 11 straight matches with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1. Chodur, who is 15-3 this season, won his match at No. 4 by a 6-1, 7-6 (2) score. The two singles wins were not enough as
Mate Voros (No. 2; 6-3, 2-6, 6-3),
Jan Silva (No. 3; 7-6, 6-3) and
Rudolfs Aksenoks (No. 5; 6-1, 6-1) each fell in singles play. Aksenoks had his career-best 10-match singles winning streak end.
At No. 6,
Michael Kaplan was playing in the third set when his match was stopped after the Aggies already had the necessary four points for victory.
Next week, the Hornets will be seeking their first Big Sky Tournament title since 2013.
