GYMNASTICS TRAVELS TO WASHINGTON TO FACE THREE RANKED TEAMS

Hornets start busy weekend against Huskies, BYU and Southern Utah

OPENING PASS
  • The Sacramento State gymnastics team will start its busiest week of the year as the Hornets will compete in a four-team meet at Washington on Friday, Mar. 15, before competing in a three-team meet at Cal on Sunday, Mar. 17. The two meets will serve as the final regular season competitions of the season before Sacramento State  hosts the MPSF Championships at The Nest on Saturday, Mar. 23.
  • The meet at Washington will also include BYU and Southern Utah and begin at 6 p.m. PT.
  • Sacramento State has not competed on the road since traveling to Boise State and also facing Southern Utah on Feb. 16. The Hornets have had three consecutive meets at home including scoring 195.100 in a win over Alaska Anchorage last Sunday afternoon.

OPPONENT PREVIEW
  • Washington is tied for 27th in this week's NQS rankings at 196.590. The Huskies matched their NQS in their most recent meet at Oregon State on Mar. 8. The team is led by Skylar Killough-Wilhelm who is 22nd nationally with an NQS of 39.475 in the all-around. The senior ranks either first or second on the team in all four events.
  • UW is coached by Jen Llewellyn who is in her third season. Washington leads the all-time series against the Hornets 19-0 dating back to 1994. This week will mark the first time since 2019 that the Hornets have competed in a regular-season meet at Washington.
  • BYU enters the week 34th in the national rankings with an NQS of 196.455. Last Friday, the Cougars scored 196.450 in a home loss to Ohio State. The highest NQS on the team belongs to Brynlee Andersen on beam at 9.900  which ties her for 31st nationally.
  • Former Olympian Guard Young is in his ninth year leading BYU. The Cougars and Hornets first met in 2000 and BYU has won all five matchups.
  • Southern Utah moved up to 33rd in the standings after scoring 196.850 in a dual against Penn State last Friday. Freshman Niya Randolph leads the team and is 36th nationally with an NQS of 39.335 in the all-around.  Randolph also owns the highest NQS on the team on bars (9.895) and floor (9.880).
  • SUU has been coached by Scotty Bauman for the last 32 seasons. The T-Birds and Sacramento State will be meeting for the second of three times this season. Southern Utah earned a 196.250-195.225 win on Feb. 16 at Boise State and now own a 14-7 lead in the all-time series since 1992.
A LOOK AT LATEST ACTION
  • Sacramento State totaled 195.150 for its third-highest score of the year in a win over Alaska Anchorage last Sunday afternoon at The Nest. The Seawolves totaled 191.500.
  • Rose Wilson and Sarah Lutrel tied for first place on vault with each scoring 9.800. Bella Lahmidi set her career best with a 9.850 to finish first on bars. Sarah Lutrel was first on beam with a 9.850 and Athena Jones and Emma Morgenthaler shared first place on floor with each receiving 9.775.
  • Lutrel won the all-around with a four-event score of 39.025 for her third-highest score of the season. The sophomore had scores of 9.800 on vault, 9.625 on bars, 9.850 on beam and 9.750 on floor.
BREAKTHROUGH ON BEAM
  • Sacramento State's highest event total against Alaska Anchorage came on beam where the Hornets scored 49.025. The meet marked the second time this season that the team has scored at least 49 points in the event.
  • While the team total was high, no individual scored higher than 9.850 during the rotation. Instead, the team counted five scores ranging between 9.775 and 9.850 to reach the total. Sarah Lutrel led the way and finished first in the event for the third time this season. Kara Houghton was second at 9.825 and freshman Mallory Barron tied for third with a career-high 9.800.
  • Lutrel owns the highest NQS (9.785) and average (9.717) on beam this season. The sophomore tied the school record with a 9.950 against Air Force on Feb. 23. She has scored 9.800 or better in her last five routines.
A LONG TIME COMING
  • Sacramento State will unveil a new training facility early in the 2024 season. The building, which is located on Folsom Blvd. and is within walking distance of campus, will be mark the first time the Hornets will have access to its own facility in school history.
  • The training site will have a full size competition floor and several sets of the other apparatus. The facility is expected to open in spring 2024.
THIS AND THAT
  • Sacramento State's has now scored 194-plus in nine consecutive meets. The team's scoring average of 194.703 is the highest through 10 meets in program history and makes this year's Hornets one of just four teams to average at least 194 at this point of the season.
  • Competing twice in three days is rare but not unprecedented in school history. However, this year's stretch marks the first time the team will have in two different states in that short turnaround.
