STOCKTON, Calif. -- Sacramento State nearly overcame a 3-0 deficit, tying things at 3-3, before eventually falling, 4-3, on the road at Pacific on Saturday afternoon at the Zimmerman Tennis Center.
Trailing, 3-0, after dropping the doubles point and matches at Nos. 2 and 5 singles, Sacramento State stormed back to tie things at 3-3. That included wins at No. 1 from
Mark Keki (1-6, 6-4, 6-1), No. 3
Jan Silva (4-6, 6-3, 6-2) and No. 6
Rudolfs Aksenoks (6-3, 1-6, 7-6).
The Hornets dropped the first set in five of their six singles matches, making the near comeback even more impressive. The match ended at No. 4 where Pacific's Terence Das defeated
Adam Chodur, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4.
Pacific improved to 5-1 overall, and 3-0 at home. The Tigers won their fourth straight. Sacramento State, which was playing for the first time in two weeks, dropped to 5-4 overall. Of the Hornets' nine matches thus far, six have come on the road (3-0 at home, 2-4 on the road).
Similar to singles play, the doubles was just as close. Sacramento State got a win at No. 3 from Silva/
Jiri Novak (6-3), but the Tigers won at No. 1 (7-5) and No. 2 (6-4).
Of the six singles matches, only two were decided in straight sets. That included
Mate Voros falling at No. 2 (6-2, 6-3) and Novak dropping his match at No. 5 (6-3, 6-3).
Today marked the conclusion of a four-match road trip for the Hornets. Sacramento State will play at home for the first time in nearly a month when it welcomes Idaho State on Friday at 1 p.m. That match also marks the Big Sky Conference opener for Sacramento State.
