OGDEN, Utah -- Weber State led from start to finish, and took advantage of 21 Sacramento State turnovers, on the way to a 58-53 victory over Sacramento State on Saturday evening at the Dee Events Center.
The Wildcats outscored the Hornets, 19-11, in points off turnovers and that proved to be the difference in a five-point win. Sacramento State turned the ball over 11 times in the first half, and 10 times in the second half and the Wildcats took full advantage.
Although Weber never trailed, Sacramento State trailed by single digits the final 14:30. That included keeping things at a two-possession game the final 2:16. The Hornets cut the deficit to three points with 1:22 remaining, and two points with nine seconds left, but Weber State answered with a bucket each time on its next possession.
Perhaps the biggest play of the game was Dillon Jones' step back jumper with 50 seconds left to push the Wildcat lead to five points after the Hornets'
Austin Patterson had just buried a 3-ball. A
Duncan Powell bucket would later slice the Weber lead to 55-53 at the nine-second mark, but Steven Verplancken answered with a layup to put things away.
The Wildcats never held larger than an 11-point advantage, and led by single digits for all but 58 seconds in the second half. Sacramento State dominated the glass, 30-17 (including 10 offensive rebounds), but Weber State converted on two more field goals and three more free throws. The Wildcats shot 48% (21-44) from the field, the Hornets 45% (19-42) from the field, and Weber was 12-for-16 from the line compared to 9-of-10 for Sacramento State.
The Hornets (6-19, 2-10) and Wildcats (16-9, 7-5) split the season series as Sacramento State won, 71-69, on Jan. 11 at the Nest. Only six games remain in the regular season for both teams before the Big Sky Tournament begins on March 9 in Boise.
Sacramento State received 40 points from its bench as three reserves scored in double figures. As usual, the Hornets went young as the team started three freshmen. In addition, the team used four freshmen and one sophomore in its nine-man rotation.
The Hornets outrebounded the Wildcats, 30-17, and converted 10 offensive boards into 12 second chance points. Sacramento State shot 45% (19-42) from the field, 35% (6-17) from the 3-point line and 90% (9-10) from the free throw line. Of those six made 3-balls, four came from Patterson who was 4-for-6 from distance.
Powell was very good, finishing with a team-high 17 points (7-9 FG, 3-3 FT) to go along with five rebounds and two assists. Patterson scored 12 points (4-7 FG, 4-6 3FG) go with five rebounds and three steals.

No other Hornet finished with more than five points.
Zee Hamoda had five points and three steals, and
Bowyn Beatty finished with two points and six rebounds.
Of the Hornets' final six games, four will come at home. That includes next week's games on Thursday vs. Northern Arizona (6 p.m.), and Saturday vs Northern Colorado (2 p.m.).
