SACRAMENTO -- Northern Arizona outscored the Hornets, 41-27, on 9-of-16 3-point shooting in the second half, to defeat Sacramento State, 73-58, on Thursday evening at the Nest.
NAU entered halftime with a 32-31 lead, but had a huge second half that saw the team shoot 14-of-26 from the field (54%), including nine treys. Leading the way was Trenton McLaughlin who scored 17 second half points on 5-of-7 from the 3-point line.
The Lumberjacks broke things open with a 22-6 run that spanned five minutes to stretch a one-point lead all the way to a 63-46 advantage with 6:47 remaining. NAU buried six 3-pointers during the spurt, including four from McLaughlin. Neither team led by more than six points the first 28 minutes of the contest.
Only five games remain in the regular season, and three of those will come at home for the Hornets (6-20, 2-11), including a Saturday afternoon matchup with Northern Colorado at 2 p.m. Northern Arizona, coming off a home win over Montana State last Saturday, improved to 12-14 overall and 5-7 with the victory.
NAU finished the game shooting 50% (27-54) from the field and 50% (13-26) from the 3-point line. The 13 3-balls were the third highest total the Hornets have yielded this season.
Sacramento State had huge advantages in rebounding (41-25), points in the paint (40-26), second chance points (27-14) and bench points (34-21). However, the Hornets shot 39% (22-57) and made just one 3-pointer (1-for-10). Sacramento State didn't commit many turnovers (13), but NAU converted those miscues into 22 points.
Leading the Hornets was
Duncan Powell who posted his fifth double-double. The sophomore had 20 points (8-12 FG, 4-6 FT) to go with 10 rebounds in 29 minutes. Seven of his 10 rebounds came on the offensive glass, a common theme as Sacramento State pulled 22 offensive boards (second highest total of the season).
Jacob Holt had a career-high 13 points (4-6 FG, 5-5 FT) to go with six rebounds and two blocked shots. He had five offensive rebounds.
Rounding out the three Hornets in double figures was

Bowyn Beatty added six points and four rebounds (three offensive), and
Austin Patterson finished with four points and three boards.
Emil Skytta (4) and
