MEN’S BASKETBALL DROPS RIVALRY GAME TO UC DAVIS, 69-62

SACRAMENTO -- UC Davis outscored the Hornets by three points in the first half (35-32) and four in the second half (34-30) on the way to 69-62 victory over Sacramento State on Saturday evening at the Nest.

In the 122nd meeting between the rivals, the Aggies held a lead for 22:52 while the Hornets had an advantage for 14:16 of clock. That included Sacramento State jumping out to a 15-3 lead before the Aggies began chipping away at their deficit. The Hornets' largest lead of the contest was that 12-point advantage.

However, UC Davis had the game tied at 28-28 at the 5:32 mark of the first half, and led the final 20:55 of the contest. That included the entire second half, as the Hornets remained close throughout but could not get over the hump. Sacramento State trailed, 67-62, with 1:56 remaining, but did not score again. A pair of UC Davis free throws marked the game's only scoring during the final 1:55.

The Hornets, who had won four of the last five meetings between the two teams, saw their all-time record against UC Davis fall to 73-49. Today marked the first time the teams played at the Nest since 2015 as the rivals played six of the last seven years at Golden1 Center.

Both teams made 23 field goals (UCD 48% FG, SAC 42% FG), and the Hornets buried three more 3-pointers (7-for-22), but the game was won at the free throw line. The Aggies connected on 19-of-27 (70%) from the charity stripe while the Hornets were just 9-for-13. UC Davis also had a big advantage in fast break points (13-4).

Jacob Holt scored 13 points during the Hornets' game-opening 15-3 spurt, but was limited to four points the rest of the way. He had team highs in points (17) and rebounds (7) and led the Hornets in scoring for the fourth straight game. He was joined in double figures by Julian Vaughns (15 pts, 3-4 3FG) and EJ Neal (10 pts, 2-3 3FG). All 15 of those Vaughns points came in the second half, and he was a team-high +3 in plus/minus.

Emil Skytta had eight points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals, while Bailey Nunn posted eight points, three rebounds and four assists. No other Hornet had more than two points.

Sacramento State returns to action when it travels to Corvallis to take on Oregon State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Hornets will then begin a season-long five game homestand that lasts Dec. 22-Jan. 11.
