FRESNO, Calif. -- Sacramento State held a seven-point halftime lead, but Fresno State outscored the Hornets, 34-20, in the second half on the way to a 64-57 win Friday evening at Save Mart Center.
After shooting 50% (15-30) in the first half, the Hornets went ice cold in the second half knocking down just 29% (9-31) of their field goal attempts. Sacramento State, which led by as many as 11 points in the first half, had trouble scoring late.
In fact, the Hornets missed eight of their final nine field goal attempts and did not score the last 3:13 of the contest. Fresno State took advantage, closing the game on a 6-0 run after a
Jacob Holt bucket had the Hornets within one point (58-57) with slightly over three minutes to play.
It didn't help that seemingly every whistle went Fresno State's way. The Bulldogs finished the game with 19 free throw attempts (14-19, 74%) while the Hornets went to the line just twice (1-2, 50%). Somehow, the Hornets did not attempt a free throw the final 38:20 of the contest despite physical play from both teams. Meanwhile, Fresno State took full advantage of the disparity, attempting the game's final 19 free throws.
Both teams shot the same amount of field goals with the Hornets converting on 39% (24-61), while the Bulldogs shot 21-of-61 (34%). Both teams also went 8-for-30 from the 3-point line. The Hornets were 6-of-13 from deep in the first half, but just 2-for-17 in the second half. The Hornets led, 37-30, at the break.
Sacramento State moved its record to 1-1 on the young season, while tonight served as Fresno State's season opener.
Making his Hornet debut after redshirting last season, junior
Julian Vaughns was impressive, finishing with a team-high 17 points on 8-for-12 shooting to go with six rebounds. He was the only Hornet in double figures. Fresno State was led by Amar Augillard who dropped 30 points off the bench, including 22 in the second half. Augillard almost single-handedly led the Bulldogs to the win, scoring 22 of Fresno State's 34 second half points.
EJ Neal had nine points (3-7 3FG) and three rebounds. Nine of the 10 Hornets who played in tonight's game scored, including true freshman
Lachlan Brewer who dropped eight points on 3-for-5 from the field and 2-of-4 from distance while posting a team-best +6 in plus/minus. Each of the Hornets' top three scorers (Vaughns, Neal, Brewer) are playing their first seasons in a Sacramento State uniform.
Starters
Jacob Holt (5 pts, 3 reb, 3 ast),
Emil Skytta (5 pts, 3 reb),
Alex Kovatchev (4 pts, 7 reb) and
Jalen Pitre (4 pts, 2 blk) all scored between four and five points.
Bowyn Beatty added four rebounds and a game-high three blocked shots off the bench.
The Hornets, who will play four of their first six games on the road, return to action Tuesday when they travel to UC San Diego. Tip is 7 p.m., and the game will stream on ESPN+.
