SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State had 15 aces, 16.0 team blocks and limited Eastern Washington to an .063 hitting percentage on the way to a 3-1 victory over the Eagles on Saturday afternoon. A crowd of 613 watched as the Hornets won, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-17.
The 15 aces were one shy of the school record of 16, set in 2022. In addition, the 16.0 team blocks were easily a season high, surpassing the previous mark of 12, set on two occasions. After Eastern Washington hit .269 in the first set, the Eagles were limited to marks of -.115, .125 and -.029 over the final three sets, respectively.
Muliple Hornet career highs were set as middle blocker
Ashlynn Archer had 12 blocks, which also ties for the 10th best mark in school history. Setter
Kate Doorn had a career-best six aces, tied for the sixth best mark in school history.
The momentum swung in the second set. After losing the first set, Sacramento State found itself down, 19-10, in the second frame. The Hornets, however, finished the set on a 15-4 run to tie things at 1-1, and never looked back. During that second set, the Eagles had a 13-0 run to overcome what had been a 6-0 deficit when
Bridgette Smith had four aces in the first six points. Smith finished with five aces, as she and Doorn combined for 11 of the team's 16 aces.
Sacramento State, which has just six matches left in the regular season, improved to 14-9 overall and 7-3 in the Big Sky Conference. The Hornets are also 8-1 at home this season, including 5-1 vs. league foes. Since 2015, Sacramento State is now 68-11 (.861 win%) at home vs. conference competition.
Coupled with the Hornets' four-set win in Cheney on Sept. 28, the Hornets swept the season series over Eastern Washington for the fifth straight season.
The Hornets will now spend the next two weeks on the road, an important stretch that will see the team play four straight on the road. Positioning for the Big Sky Tournament is at a premium this time of the season, and Sacramento State is currently fourth in the league standings, but just three games out of first place and one game out of second. By virtue of winning last season's Big Sky regular season title, the Hornets will host the conference tournament Thanksgiving Week (Nov. 27-29).
Three Hornets finished in double-figure kills, comprised of
Caitlin Volkmann (17 kills, 9 digs), Smith (15 kills, 11 digs, 5 aces) and
Ellie Tisko (12 kills, 9 digs, 6 blocks, .450 hit%). Archer had six kills to go with her 12 blocks. Those four players combined for all but one of the Hornets' 51 kills.
Doorn had season highs in assists (41) and career bests in aces (6) and blocks (4). She also finished with eight digs.
Reese Ampi had a team-high tying 11 digs, and
Abbey Kadillak added three digs.
Mia Guevara posted a season-high tying two aces.
The Hornets are back in action next week for a Thursday matchup at Northern Colorado (5 p.m. PT), and a Saturday game at Northern Arizona at 11 a.m. PT.
Sacramento State does not play at home again until hosting Idaho State on Nov. 21. The final match of the regular season, and Senior Night, will take place Nov. 23 vs. Weber State.
