SACRAMENTO -- The Hornets led for over 30 minutes of game clock, but CSUN closed the final 3:46 on a 15-2 run to beat Sacramento State, 79-69, on Saturday at the Nest.
The Hornets led, 67-64, with 3:55 remaining, but converted on just one of its final seven shots while Northridge made five of its last seven. Perhaps the biggest moment in the game came when Sacramento State leading scorer
Jacob Holt fouled out with the Hornets on top, 67-65, and 3:30 to play. From that point on, it was all Northridge, who ripped off 15 straight points until a Hornet bucket with 29 seconds left stopped the drought. By that time, the game was already well in hand for CSUN.
Holt finished with a career-high 20 points on 4-6 FG, 1-2 3FG, and 11-13 FT. The senior was fouled nine times, and both his free throws made and attempted were also career bests.
Sacramento State used a 16-0 run during the first half to build a game-high 31-15 lead at the 11:40 mark. Northridge, however, kept chipping away at the deficit, eventually heading to halftime with a 43-32 Hornet lead. The Matadors completed the comeback when they took their first lead since 11-9, at 69-67 with three minutes to play.
The Hornets dropped to 1-3 while CSUN improved to 3-1.
Sacramento State shot 42% (22-53) from the field, 33% (10-30) from the 3-point line and 75% (15-20) from the free throw line. After a big first half, Sacramento State was just 9-for-28 and 3-of-15 from deep in the second half. CSUN, which finished the game 50% (25-50) from the field, also had a 35-31 edge in the rebounding department and 7-2 in second chance points.
Three Hornets scored in double figures, and all nine players cracked the scoring column. Holt led the way while
Julian Vaughns had 14 points, and
EJ Neal added 10 points and five rebounds.
Bailey Nunn had six points and four assists,
Emil Skytta five points, four rebounds and four assists, and
Jalen Pitre five points and five rebounds.
Alex Kovatchev led the team with six rebounds, and
Chudi Dioramma had four points, two rebounds, two assists and a team-high +12 in plus/minus.
For Northridge, Keonte Jones (18) and Scotty Washington (18) combined for 36 of the Matadors' 47 second-half points.
Sacramento State will get seven days of rest before returning to action on Sunday, Nov. 24, at Cal. Tip is 1 p.m.
