SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State cross country teams will face the top runners in the Western United States as they compete at the NCAA Div. I Cross Country West Regional on Friday at Colfax Golf Course. The women's 6K race will be begin at 11 a.m. with the men's 10K race starting an hour later.
Â
The Hornets last competed at the Big Sky Conference Championships in Pocatello, Idaho on Nov. 1.
Ashley Busienei led the women over the 5K course in 19:10.7 to place 30
th overall. The women have run 6K in the other four meets this season and have been paced by
Tia Oliver and
Anna Harmon at that distance. Oliver owns the fastest time on the team in three meets, including a time of 20:27.8 at the UCR Invitational and winning the SF State Invitational.
Â
Ryan Martin has been the fastest Hornet in the last four races for the men. Martin placed 39
th at the Big Sky Championships with an 8K time of 25:41.7. His fastest time during the year was 24:39.2 at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational on Oct. 19. The NCAA West Regional will be the first 10K race for the team this season.
Â
A trio of former conference rivals headline the West Region rankings for the men. The group is led by Stanford which finished second at the ACC Championships. Washington and Oregon are ranked second and third in the region after placing second and third at the Big Ten Championships. The remainder of the top five is comprised of WAC champion California Baptist and WCC champion Portland.
Â
The women's regional rankings have a similar look with Oregon holding the top spot after a win at the Big Ten Championship. Washington is second while Stanford is third. The pair both placed second at their respective conference meets. Gonzaga is fourth after winning the WCC team title and is trailed by Portland.
There are 39 women's teams and 31 men's teams entered into the West Regional. The top two teams in each of the nine regionals secure automatic bids to the championship. The first four regional finishers not from an automatic qualifying or at-large team also secure an auto-bid to the championships. If a team doesn't secure an automatic bid, it will have to rely on the NCAA DI Cross Country Subcommittee to select it as one of the 13 at-large teams. Only two individual at-larges are selected.
Each team can have a maximum of seven entries in each race with the top five finishers counting towards the team total.
