VOLLEYBALL POSTS ROAD WIN AT PORTLAND STATE; SWEEPS SEASON SERIES WITH VIKINGS

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Three Hornets had double-doubles - Bridgette Smith 16 kills, 15 digs; Caitlin Volkmann 15 kills, 12 digs; Kate Doorn 23 ast, 10 digs - to lead Sacramento State to a 3-1 victory at Portland State at Viking Pavilion. Set scores were 25-19, 25-23, 23-25, 25-14.

The Hornets (12-7, 5-1) moved into a first place tie with Northern Colorado in the Big Sky Conference standings. Tonight also began  a stretch of three straight, and seven of the next nine matches on the road for the Hornets. The victory gave the Hornets a season sweep of Portland State (4-13, 3-3), which included a three-set win at the Nest two weeks ago.

The Hornets are now 2-0 on the road against Big Sky foes, which included a four-set victory at Eastern Washington on Sept. 28. Tonight was the only match of the week for Sacramento State, which will play at Weber State and Idaho State next week.

The Hornets hit a respectable .255, but the defense came up large in limiting Portland State to a .115 percentage. The .115 mark was the third lowest of the season against Sacramento State, as Portland State was held to 38 kills with 23 errors in 131 attacks. Conversely, Sacramento State had 19 more kills (57) while finishing with a .255 hitting percentage.

The Hornets never trailed in the first and fourth sets, as the match featured just 10 ties and four lead changes.

The double-doubles were the sixth of the season for Smith, fifth for Volkmann, and fourth for Doorn. In addition, Smith, who leads the Big Sky in kills, has now tallied double-figure kills in 10 straight matches. She led all players with 16 kills, and the 15 digs were just four shy of her career best. Volkmann's 15 kills were her seventh straight match with double digits in kills, and Doorn notched her 15th career dub-dub.

Ellie Tisko rounded out the three Hornets with double-figure kills, finishing with 12 to go along with a .400 hitting percentage.

Middle blocker Karlie Spohn had four kills, four blocks and a .500 hitting percentage, and fellow middle Ashlynn Archer six kills and a pair of stuffs. Reese Ampi had eight digs and a pair of aces, and Hailey Plugge 20 assists and four digs.

Next week, Sacramento State will play Weber State on Thursday at 5 p.m. PT, and Idaho State on Saturday at 11 a.m. PT.
