SACRAMENTO -- Montana closed the final 3:31 on a 10-0 run to complete a 70-67 comeback win over Sacramento State on Saturday evening at the Nest.
In a game that saw the Hornets lead for 26 minutes of clock, the Grizzlies overcame a late 67-60 deficit. The Hornets missed their last six shots from the field, and did not score the final 3:49. After
Duncan Powell split a pair of free throws to put Sacramento State up, 67-60, Montana converted four of its last five field goal attempts, which included a huge 3-ball from Thomas Dischon with 24 seconds remaining.
That was Dischon's first triple of the night, and gave the Grizzlies their first lead (69-67) since the 10:44 mark. In fact, Montana led for just 1:31 of the second half. The Hornets missed a 3-pointer on their next possession, and the Grizzlies split a pair of free throws with 2.2 seconds left. Trailing by three, the Hornets drew up an inbounds play that gave sharp shooter
Austin Patterson a clean look at a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but his shot was off the mark.
Neither team led by more than eight points the entire way, and the game featured seven lead changes and four ties. Sacramento State dominated the glass, outrebounding Montana, 34-22, including 11 offensive rebounds. The Hornets held a 10-2 advantage in second chance points, and shot 44% (22-50) from the field and 86% (19-22) from the free throw line. The Hornets converted on seven more free throws than Montana (12-for-15), but the Grizzlies shot 52% from the field (25-48) and 42% (8-19) from distance. The Hornets converted 4-of-17 from the 3-point stripe.
The loss dropped Sacramento State to 2-6 in the Big Sky Conference, and 5-4 at home. Of the eight games against a conference opponent, seven have been decided by single digits as the Hornets are seemingly always locked in a close game. Of those eight league games, five have been decided by three points or less. Sacramento State is 2-3 in those outcomes.
Montana improved to 14-7 overall and 5-3 in league. The Grizzlies had not played a game decided by five points or less all season until this evening. Montana has won 12 of its last 15 games, and improved to 6-5 on the road.
Sacramento State, which led at halftime (41-39), fell to 0-12 when allowing an opponent to score 70 points or more. Each of the last three Hornet opponents have scored exactly 70 points.
The Hornets were led by
Zee Hamoda's game-high tying 17 points to go with four boards. He has now led the team in scoring in four of the last five games. Patterson finished with 14 points on a very proficient line of 3-4 FG, 1-2 3FG, and 7-8 FT. He led the team in assists (4) and blocked shots (2).
Jacob Holt had nine points and six rebounds (three offensive),
Akol Mawein seven points and four boards,
Emil Skytta eight points and a pair of assists, and Powell six points and seven rebounds. True freshman
Bowyn Beatty, who made his first start of the season, finished with four points, five rebounds and a team-best +5 in plus/minus.
Sacramento State is back on the road next week for a Saturday road matchup at 4 p.m. against Portland State. That game will mark the midway point of the conference season.
