MEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYS CLOSE AGAIN, BUT FALLS ON THE ROAD AT PORTLAND STATE, 58-51

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland State had a big second half, which included a game-closing 28-15 run, on the way to a 58-51 victory over Sacramento State on Saturday evening at Viking Pavilion.

The Hornets led for 23 minutes of game clock, most of that in the first half. Portland State, however, outscored the Hornets in the second half by a 34-22 margin, and was the aggressor on the glass. The Hornets, who entered the game as the 18th best rebounding team in the nation, saw Portland State grab 13 offensive rebounds in the second half and convert those into 15 second chance points.

Usually, its Sacramento State that dominates the glass and the second chance point department, but the Vikings were able to score 15 of their 34 second half points off extra opportunities. The Vikings took the lead for good on a Jorell Saterfield jumper (40-38) with 10:09 remaining, and extended their lead to as many as 10 points before settling for the seven-point victory.

The Hornets cut the deficit to five points with 12 seconds left, but would get no closer.

Sacramento State played its seventh straight game decided by single digits, and fell to 6-16 overall and 2-7 in the Big Sky Conference. Of the Hornets' nine games in league play, eight have resulted in single digit outcomes.

Portland State improved to 3-0 on its current four-game homestand, which included victories against the Montana schools last week. The Vikings are now 14-8 and 5-4 in league play. Eleven of the last 14 meetings between the Hornets and Viks have resulted in single digit outcomes.

Sacramento State did outrebound the Vikings (34-33), but PSU had an 18-5 advantage in second chance points. Both teams shot 42% from the field, but the Vikings converted on two more 3-balls and went to the free throw line eight more times. The Hornets finished with 28 points in the paint, as the team converted on just 3-of-18 from distance.

All nine Hornets in the rotation scored, including Zee Hamoda's 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists. He was also a +9 in plus/minus. Duncan Powell finished with 11 points and three rebounds, and scored the Hornets' final 11 points spanning the last 3:24 of the contest.

Of the Hornets' nine rotation players, four were freshmen. That included point guard Bailey Nunn, who played 22 active minutes, finishing with six points, five assists, a steal and a team-best +10 in plus/minus. Akol Mawein had five points and five rebounds, Jacob Holt five points and four boards, and Austin Patterson five points and three rebounds.

Of the Hornets' five starters, two were freshmen and one was a sophomore. Freshman center Bowyn Beatty made his second collegiate start, finishing with two points, four rebounds and two assists.

Sacramento State is back in action in two days as it hosts Idaho on Monday at 6 p.m. The Hornets are currently at the midway point of the conference season.
