VERSTEEG NETS NEW CAREER HIGH AS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS TO NORTHERN ARIZONA

SACRAMENTO — Sophomore Benthe Versteeg finished with a career-high 26 points to lead a trio of Hornets in double figures, but visiting Northern Arizona shot 71 percent in the opening quarter and led wire-to-wire on Saturday en route to an 83-66 victory over Sacramento State at The Nest.

Versteeg, who posted her third-double-digit game in her last four and her eighth overall this year, finished a career-best 10-of-18 from the field and drained all six of her shots from the line en route to her first collegiate 20-point performance. The sophomore's previous high bar for points was 17 set against Idaho on Dec. 28 to tip-off Big Sky Conference play.

She also added four assists, three rebounds, and a pair of steals to her final stat line.

The sophomore was joined in double figures by freshman Summah Hanson, who ended her day with 19 points and seven rebounds, bouncing back from being held scoreless in a game for the first time this season two night ago against Northern Colorado. Hanson reached double figures in her team-best 12th game this season (in 17 starts) and the fifth time in her last six.

Sophomore Irune Orio also continued her offensive run that has seen her post double digits in each of her last three (and four of her last five overall), ending Saturday with 11 points to go with three rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.

Northern Arizona (12-6, 4-1) never trailed after opening the game on fire, hitting 15-of-21 from the field in the period, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, to jump out to a 37-22 lead after the first 10 minutes. The Hornets (1-16, 0-6) trailed by as many as 21 in the second quarter before answering the bell after the break and winning the third period, 17-15.

A 9-2 burst by Sacramento State in the third cut the Lumberjacks' lead down to just 13 midway through the quarter, but that was as close as the Hornets would get as both teams continued to battle back-and-forth, trading baskets over the final 14 minutes.

The Hornets' defense did well to limit NAU's offense after its blistering start, holding the Lumberjacks to 35 percent or less from the floor in each of the final three quarters and turning them over 15 times after Northern Arizona had committed just one miscue in the first period.

Sophie Glancey led the Lumberjacks with 24 points and 13 rebounds, joined in double figures by three teammates.

Sacramento State hits the road for the "Treasure State" next week, taking on Montana State on Thursday (Jan. 25) and Montana on Saturday (Jan. 27).
