SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Kara Houghton finished in first place on bars,
Rylin Zimmerman and
Grace Gilman placed second and third on floor and
Emma Morgenthaler was third on vault to lead the Sacramento State gymnastics team on Sunday afternoon. The Hornets scored 194.025 to place second in the meet to San Jose State (194.950).
Sacramento State started the meet with another strong showing on vault. The Hornets totaled 48.825 and were led by Morgenthaler's 9.825. The team started the rotation with a 9.750 from
Grace Gilman and later counted a 9.725 from freshman
Rose Wilson. The lineup concluded with a 9.775 from
Rylin Zimmerman and a 9.750 from
Sarah Lutrel. The team score was the highest on vault since also totaling 48.825 in a four-team meet at Texas Women's on Feb. 19, 2017.
Sacramento State added a 48.175 on bars in the second rotation despite being forced to count a fall. Houghton paced the team with a 9.875 to tie her career best. That score came last season against Air Force where she also finished in first place. Freshman
Jillianne Lastra aded a 9.725 to rank second on the team while
Sarah Lutrel finished close behind with a 9.700.
The Spartans opened the meet on bars with a 48.875 and followed with a 48.925 on vault to take a 97.800-97.000 lead after two rotations. SJSU extended its advantage in the third rotation as it scored 48.925 on floor compared to a 48.275 on beam from Sacramento State. Freshman
Athena Jones led the charge for the Hornets, scoring 9.825 to finish in fourth place overall.
Rylin Zimmerman and
Sarah Lutrel tied for fifth at 9.825.
Sacramento State was able to claw back into contention during the fourth rotation. The Hornets counted five floor scores of at least 9.725 on floor to finish with a 48.925. At the same time, the Spartans had falls in consecutive routines on beam but rallied with 9.900s from Katherine Weyhiller and Lauren Macpherson in their final two routines to salvage a 48.275.
Zimmerman scored 9.850 in her second collegiate routine on the event to start the run for Sacramento State. The sophomore was followed by a 9.725 from Jones and a 9.800 from Morgenthaler. Gilman scored 9.825 while Lutrel scored a 9.725 to anchor the lineup.
Macpherson won the all-around competition with a total of 39.175. Lutrel was second at 38.950.
Sacramento State will head to Arizona to face the Wildcats on Sunday, Jan. 21, at 12 p.m. PT.
