HORNET NEWCOMER SHINES FOR SPAIN AT FIBA 3X3 EVENT

SACRAMENTO -- One of nine new faces on the roster for the Sacramento State women's basketball team, incoming freshman Sofia Alonso got an early jump on her collegiate debut with some international competition, representing Spain at the FIBA 3x3 U18 World Cup from Aug. 30 to Sept. 3 in Debrecen, Hungary.

Alonso shared the team lead in scoring with 18 points at the 20-team event, helping Spain to a 2-2 overall record in pool play. Spain posted wins over Morocco (21-4) and Ukraine (15-8), while falling to Lithuania (19-13) and Japan (15-9) — which both qualified for the championship bracket by virtue of their top-two finish in the group. Both Lithuania and Japan reached the semifinals before losing their respective games against France and the United States, with Japan claiming third-place thanks to a 21-11 victory over Lithuania.

On the court, Alonso finished with a team-high eight points in a win over Ukraine and added five more in a victory over Morocco, finishing tied for 34th in points in the entire event.

Spain has been a power in this event over the years, winning the first-ever competition back in 2011 in Italy, and earning medals six times, including runner-up finishes in 2012 and 2021.

Now she joins her Hornet teammates looking to build of a season in which Sacramento State finished with a 25-8 overall record, its first Big Sky Conference regular season and tournament titles, and the program's first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament.
