STOCKTON, Calif. -- Sacramento State's defense limited CSU Bakersfield to a negative hitting percentage (-.027) on the way to a three-set sweep (25-15, 25-15, 25-20) of the Roadrunners in the first round of the Central Cal Volleyball Challenge.
The Hornets, who were playing the first of three matches in three days, improved to 7-5 this season. Bakersfield dropped to 4-6. Sacramento State has now defeated the Roadrunners on seven straight occasions, and is 21-6 in the all-time series.
Sacramento State used set-sealing runs of 12-0 in the first, 15-5 in the second, and 8-2 to close the third. The Hornets limited Bakersfield to just 21 kills with 24 errors in 111 attacks. That includes 55 digs and nine team blocks despite the match lasting just three sets.
The Hornets had another big performance from middle blocker
Kalani Hayes who notched her career-best fifth straight match with double-figure kills. In fact, she had match highs in kills (10), blocks (4) and hitting percentage (.588). Hayes did not have an error in 17 swings, and is now hitting .321 this year.
Bridgette Smith had eight kills and seven digs, and is now just nine shy of reaching the 1,000 career kill milestone.
Ellie Tisko had eight kills and a .417 hitting percentage, and
Caty Cordano led all players with 16 digs. Cordano has recorded double digits in digs in every match this season, and is averaging 4.04 digs per set. Middle blocker
Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin had three kills, three blocks, a .600 hitting percentage, and is now hitting .362 this year.
Setters
Hailey Plugge (18 ast, 8 digs) and
Kate Doorn (10 ast, 8 digs) combined for 28 assists and 16 digs.
Greta Davis had two kills, nine digs and accounted for all three of the Hornets' aces. It was Davis that served 11 points of the 12-0 run in the first, which included a pair of aces during that spurt.
Catlin Volkmann added five kills, five digs and four blocks.
Sacramento State is back in action tomorrow to face Fresno State at 3 p.m. The Hornets conclude the event on Saturday at Pacific at 3 p.m.
