VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO FRESNO STATE; SMITH NOTCHES 1,000TH CAREER KILL

STOCKTON, Calif. -- Ellie Tisko had 10 kills and a .529 hitting percentage, and Bridgette Smith notched her 1,000th career kill, but it was not enough in Sacramento State's 3-0 loss (25-22, 25-15, 26-24) to Fresno State on Friday afternoon at the Spanos Center.

Today marked the second round of the Central Cal Challenge, a three-day event that saw the Hornets sweep CSU Bakersfield yesterday. Sacramento State concludes the tournament tomorrow against tournament host Pacific at 3 p.m.

The highlight of the day was Smith. The senior outside hitter entered the day needing nine kills to reach the 1,000 career kill milestone. She landed exactly on that number and now has 1,000 kills in just 83 matches played. The Salem, Ore., native becomes the 25th player during the Hornets' Div. I era (1991-pres.) to accomplish the feat.

Tisko was incredible, notching match highs in kills (10) and hitting percentage (.529) while also tallying an ace and three digs. She was the only Hornet (with more than one kill) to register a hitting percentage better than .190, as the Hornets were held to a .134 percentage. That marks the team's third lowest mark of the season.

Fresno State hit .241 and took advantage of 23 Sacramento State errors in 97 attacks. The Hornets had four more kills than the Bulldogs (36-32), but had some trouble late in sets. In the first, the Bulldogs closed on a 6-3 run after leading, 19-18. In the third, Sacramento State held a 22-20 lead, but Fresno State close on a 6-2 run. That included a costly Hornet service error at 24-24.

Tisko was the only Hornet with double-figure kills, as Smith finished with nine kills and Kalani Hayes had seven to go along with six blocks. Hayes had her career-high streak of five straight matches with double-figure kills snapped. Libero Caty Cordano had nine digs, snapping her streak of 13 straight matches with double-digit digs.

Caitlin Volkmann had five kills and five blocks, Kate Doorn had 17 assists, and Hailey Plugge 15 assists.

Tomorrow's match against Pacific marks the final non-league matchup of the season for Sacramento State. Big Sky Conference play will begin next week.
