SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State had four starters hit at least .400, and the Hornets hit .333 as a team on the way to a 3-1 victory (25-23, 25-15, 25-27, 25-19) over San Jose State on Friday evening at the Nest.
Sacramento State is now 4-1 overall, and 2-0 at the Hornets Invitational - a two-day, four-team event. The Hornets, who swept Cal State Fullerton this afternoon, conclude the tournament tomorrow vs. Portland at 12:30 p.m.
In a highly entertaining matchup in front of another energetic crowd at the Nest, Sacramento State received huge performances from a number of players. That included rightside hitter
Caitlin Volkmann who had 12 kills, three blocks and a .476 hitting percentage. It was Volkmann's kill down the line in the first set at 24-23 that put the Hornets up, 1-0.

Karlee Soderberg, playing her second match of the season, was brilliant with seven kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Middle blocker
Kalani Hayes had seven kills, two blocks and a .400 hitting percentage, and outside hitter
Bridgette Smith posted a match-high tying 16 kills to go along with four blocks. Outside hitter
Ellie Tisko had a double-double (12 kills, 13 digs), and libero
Caty Cordano led all players with 18 digs.
Making the victory even sweeter is it came against a San Jose State team (3-2) that had swept the Hornets each of the last two seasons. Sacramento State limited the Spartans to a .167 hitting percentage and had 10.0 team blocks, including a match-best seven from
Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin.
Sacramento State narrowly swept the match, but San Jose State saved a pair of match points in the third before winning, 27-25. The Hornets owned the fourth set, leading by as many as 11 points before settling for the 25-19 victory.
Setters
Hailey Plugge (30 assists, five digs) and
Kate Doorn (18 assists, five digs) ran a crisp 6-2 offense as Sacramento State hit at least .250 in all four sets. That included .619 (14-1-21) in the second.
