SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State had 25 more kills than Portland, and hit .364 on the way to a 3-1 victory (25-11, 22-25, 25-13, 25-15) over the Pilot on Saturday afternoon at the Nest.
Today marked the finale of the two-day, four-team Hornet Invitational, and Sacramento State was crowned champions based on its perfect 3-0 record. That includes victories over Cal State Fullerton and San Jose State yesterday. Final tourney records: Hornets (3-0), San Jose State (2-1), Portland (1-2) and Cal State Fullerton (0-3).
Healthy hitting percentages were a theme of the tournament for the Hornets, as they hit at least .330 in all three matches, finishing at .344. A number of players hit well during the event, including
Caitlin Volkmann (.446),
Kalani Hayes (.425),
Karlee Soderberg (.424) and
Ellie Tisko (.381).
Three Hornets were named all-tournament, but in reality, every Hornet starter could have been named all-tourney. Volkmann (2.91 kps, 0.73 bps, .446) was named the tournament MVP while setter
Hailey Plugge (7.09 aps, 1.82 dps) and outside hitter
Bridgette Smith (4.27 kps, 1.55 dps, 0.45 bps) were also named all-tournament.
Sacramento State is now 5-1 this season, the team's best six-match start since 2015. The Hornets have won three straight, and will complete their season-opening seven match homestand on Monday vs. Saint Mary's at 5 p.m.
In today's win over Portland, the Hornets held massive advantages over the Pilots in kills (61-36) and hitting percentage (.364-.114). In addition, Sacramento State got off to big starts in each of its three victorious sets, jumping to leads of 9-1 in the first, 10-2 in the third, and 10-3 in the fourth. The Hornets never trailed in any of those three sets.
Smith led all players with 20 kills to go with seven digs, two aces and a .302 hitting percentage. The 20 kills were eight more than any other player on the floor, and marked the eighth 20-kill match of her career.
