VOLLEYBALL IMPROVES TO 2-0 WITH SWEEP OF IOWA

SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State did not trail the first two sets and limited Iowa to a .194 hitting percentage on the way to a three-set sweep (25-19, 25-21, 25-21) of the Hawkeyes on Saturday evening at the Nest.

With the victory, the Hornets (2-0) remain undefeated at the season-opening Sacramento State Invitational and will wrap up tournament play tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. against Cal Poly. The Hornets opened the season yesterday evening with a 3-2 win over Nevada.

Through two days, Sacramento State is the only of the four teams at the tournament that remain undefeated: Hornets (2-0), Iowa (1-1), Cal Poly (1-1) and Nevada (0-2). Cal Poly defeated Nevada in the first match today by a 3-1 score.

The two matches tomorrow feature Nevada vs. Iowa at 11 a.m., followed by the Hornets' match vs. Cal Poly at 1:30 p.m.

Sacramento State dominated this evening's match from the start, finishing with advantages over the Hawkeyes in kills (45-33), hitting percentage (.227-.194), assists (40-30), aces (7-4) and digs (52-46). In fact, the Hornets did not trail in the match until falling behind, 2-1, in the third set.

In their last five matches vs. Big Ten Conference teams, the Hornets are 4-1. Sacramento State had big performances from a number of players, including its middles who dominated throughout the contest. Kalani Hayes (6 kills, 5 blocks, .417 hit%) and Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin (6 kills, .600 hit%) combined to hit .500.

Outside hitter Caitlin Volkmann had a match-high tying 11 kills to go with a .368 hitting percentage, Greta Davis nine kills and seven digs, and Ellie Tisko seven kills and 11 digs. Four Hornets had double figures in digs, including Tisko, Caty Cordano (10 digs), Kate Doorn (10 digs, 14 assists) and Hailey Plugge (10 digs, 22 assists, two aces). Ashlynn Archer added six kills.

NOTES -- Sacramento State will attempt to start a season 3-0 for the first time since 2016…for the second straight day, the Hornets played without outside hitter Bridgette Smith (injury) who is a two-time first team all-Big Sky Conference selection.
