SACRAMENTO -- Cal Poly limited the Hornets to a .123 hitting percentage and went on to sweep Sacramento State, 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-16), on Sunday afternoon at the Nest.
The match was the finale of the three-day Sacramento State Invitational. Final records were Cal Poly (2-1), Sacramento State (2-1), Iowa (1-2) and Nevada (1-2). Cal Poly is the tournament champion by virtue of beating the Hornets this afternoon.
The Hornets defeated Nevada (3-2) on Friday, and Iowa (3-0) on Saturday prior to falling this afternoon. Sacramento State, in the midst of a seven-match homestand to open the season, will host the Hornet Invitational next Friday-Saturday.
The Hornets had two players named to the all-tournament team in outside hitter
Caitlin Volkmann and libero
Caty Cordano. Volkmann finished the tournament averaging 2.64 kills and 0.73 blocks per set while hitting .290. Cordano averaged 4.00 digs per set, and posted double-figure digs in all three matches.
In today's match, Cal Poly held healthy statistical advantages over Sacramento State in kills (43-32), hitting percentage (.270-.123), assists (40-31), aces (6-3) and blocks (9.0-5.0). Sacramento State held a 22-20 advantage in the second set, but the Mustangs finished the frame on a 5-1 run.
The Hornets were led by Cordano's match-high tying 12 digs and she also added a pair of aces. Middle blocker
Kalani Hayes had seven kills and a .333 hitting percentage, and outside hitter
Ellie Tisko had eight kills and eight digs. Outsides
Greta Davis posted eight kills, and Volkmann had four kills and two blocks.
Hailey Plugge had 15 assists and four digs,
Kate Doorn 10 assists and five digs, and
Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin added three kills and three blocks.
The Hornets will play three matches at home next week as part of the
Hornet Invitational. That includes matchups vs. Cal State Fullerton (12 p.m.) and San Jose State (7 p.m.) on Friday, and Portland (12:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
