SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State overcame a 2-1 sets deficit by outscoring Nevada, 40-19, over the final two frames on the way to a 3-2 victory (19-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-11, 15-8) over the Wolf Pack on Friday evening at the Nest.
The match marked the season opener for both teams. Today also marked the first day of the Sacramento State Invitational, a three-day, four-team tournament hosted by the Hornets. In today's earlier match, Iowa defeated Cal Poly, 3-1.
Sacramento State is back tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. where it will host Iowa in the second round. For the second straight season, the Hornets opened the year with a victory over Nevada at home. Last season, the Hornets beat the Wolf Pack in four sets.
The Hornets combined to hit a whopping .510 (28-3-49) over the final two sets, committing just three hitting errors in the process. Nevada had no answer, as Sacramento State ripped off a 10-0 run early in the fourth set and never looked back. The Hornets began the fifth set on a 3-0 run and never trailed.
Making the win even more impressive is the Hornets were playing without two starters in outside hitter
Bridgette Smith (injury) and rightside hitter
Karlee Soderberg (sick). Their absence was made up by huge performances by a number of Hornets.
That included outside hitters
Ellie Tisko (20 kills, 18 digs) and
Greta Davis (15 kills, 16 digs) who both posted their first career double-doubles. In fact, the kills and digs were career highs for both players. Tisko was incredible in the final two sets, combining for 10 kills without an error in 12 swings (.833 hit%). That included four kills in five attacks in the final frame.
Caitlin Volkmann finished with 14 kills, six blocks and a match-high .357 hitting percentage, libero
Caty Cordano led all players with 22 digs, and setters
Hailey Plugge (27 assists, nine digs) and
Kate Doorn (24 assists, seven digs) successfully ran a 6-2 offense. Middle blockers
Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin (six kills, seven blocks) and
Kalani Hayes (six kills, three blocks) combined for 12 kills and 10 blocks.
Rightside hitter
Ashlynn Archer had career highs in kills (5) and blocks (4), and it was Tisko that served nine straight points during the Hornets' 10-0 run in the fourth set.
Overall, Nevada was held to a .099 hitting percentage as Sacramento State totaled 79 digs (16 more than Nevada) and 14.0 team blocks. The Hornets dominated the match statistically, as it also had 21 more kills than Nevada (66-45). The Wolf Pack hit .120 or less in four of the five sets.
Prior to the Hornets taking on Iowa tomorrow, Cal Poly will face Nevada at 4:30 p.m.
