GORBUNOVA, FERREROS EARN ALL-BIG SKY WOMEN’S TENNIS HONORS

SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State junior Mayya Gorbunova and sophomore Maddy Ferreros each picked up All-Big Sky Conference honors on Monday, named to the league's singles second team according to a vote of the conference's head coaches.

Both student-athletes picked up the first All-Big Sky honors of their careers, marking the first time Sacramento State has had two singles players named to the all-conference team since 2019 when Jenna Dorian was a second-team selection and Jayden Nielsen was named to the honorable mention team.

Gorbunova, a three-time Big Sky Player of the Week selection, wrapped up her first season in the green and gold with a 15-6 record at the No. 1 singles spot, including 10 consecutive victories to start the year. Gorbunova's 15 wins are the most by a Hornet in singles since Ana Loaiza Esquivas finished the 2017-18 campaign with a 16-6 record at the top spot in the lineup.

The 15 wins were tied for the second-highest total among all singles players in the Big Sky and led all No. 1 singles players in the league in both wins and winning percentage (.714).

Ferreros, who was twice named the Big Sky Player of the Week, finished the year second on the team in wins with an 11-9 overall record and led the team with a 5-3 mark in league duals. Of those 11 victories, 10 came at the No. 2 spot in the lineup and she won her only match at No. 1 in a shutout of UC Riverside.

Her 10 wins at No. 2 singles were tied for the most of any player in the Big Sky along with Weber State's Megan Davis, who picked up first-team honors, while ranking fifth in winning percentage (.526).

Advancing to the semifinals of the Big Sky Championship for the second straight season, Sacramento State finished the year with an 11-11 overall record and a 4-4 mark in league duals. The 11 wins are the most for the program since the 2017-18 squad finished with the same number, while the four Big Sky wins are the most since the Hornets finished 5-5 in 2018-19.
