BASEBALL POUNDS OUT NINE RUNS IN WIN OVER UC DAVIS

Seven hitters collect hits, while three finish with two hits on the day

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Seven Sacramento State hitters collected hits, including two from Wehiwa Aloy, Martin Vincelli-Simard and Garet Crenshaw to help the Hornets to a 9-6 win over UC Davis on Tuesday at John Smith Field.

The victory improved Sacramento State to 7-4 overall while the Aggies evened their record at 5-5.

After a scoreless first inning, the two teams exchanged fireworks in the next two frames. UC Davis took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a double from Nick Iverson and a single from Ethan Kang. That lead was short-lived as the Hornets responded with three of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Vincelli-Simard started the scoring with a line drive up the middle to plate Aloy. That was followed by a double from Crenshaw and a sacrifice fly by catcher Carson Blatnick.

Momentum swung back to UC Davis as the team scored three runs in the top of the second. The inning appeared to start well for Sacramento State as Kevin Haynes struck out the first hitter and appeared to have a ground out on the next hitter. However, an errant throw allowed the hitter to reach and following a walk, Nick Leehey hit a ball to deep right field which was lost in the sun allowing a run to score. James Williams III kept the line moving with a single to right to give UCD a 5-3 lead.

Sacramento State tied the score in the bottom of the inning as the team had its first three hitters reach base. Cesar Valero singled to right to score Gunner Gouldsmith and Crenshaw added a two-out double to score Aloy to tie the game.

From there, the Hornets never trailed again. The team broke the game open with three two-out runs in the fifth inning. Vincelli-Simard singled through the left side of the infield for the first run and Ryan Christiansen, who was making his collegiate debut, doubled to center to plate two more.

Sacramento State used four pitchers in the midweek game. Wesley Harper, Max Pettey, and Jack Zalasky combined to allow just two hits and one run over the final six innings, while Harper picking up the win and Zalasky notching his fourth save in five appearances this season.

The Hornets will next host Central Michigan in a scheduled four-game series. Due to expected inclement weather, the first game of the series has been moved to Wednesday, March 8, at 4 p.m. The teams will then play a doubleheader on Thursday at 11 a.m. Weather permitting, the final game will take place on either Friday or Saturday at a time to be determined.
