NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- The Sacramento State women's tennis team jumped out to an early lead with a doubles point victory, while Mayya Gorbunova and Tsveti Yotova combined to go 4-0 on the day, but host CSUN was able to rebound in singles play, winning four of the six contests to post a 4-3 win over the Hornets on Sunday afternoon in Northridge, Calif.
The Hornets dropped their third consecutive dual, falling to 6-7 overall with the loss on Sunday. The Matadors improved to 13-3 overall with the win.
Gorbunova and Yotova teamed up to post a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles to tie up the competition at one win apiece before Maddy Ferreros and Julia Moraes came through with the winner, posting a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles for a 1-0 Sacramento State lead in the match.
All six singles contests were decided in straight sets as CSUN rebounded quickly. The Matadors posted wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles to take their first lead in the contest, but Gorbunova bounced back to tie the match with a 6-4, 6-4, win over Jolene Coetzee at No. 1 singles to tie the match at two apiece.
Gorbunova's win snapped a two-match skid for the junior newcomer after she had opened the year with a 10-0 record at the No. 1 spot.
CSUN followed with a win at No. 6 singles and out-lasted the Hornets for a victory at No. 5 singles and the clinching point. Yotova made it a one-point final decision with her 6-2, 7-6 (5), win at No. 4 against Emma Moratella Sanz to finish out the day.
Sacramento State resumes Big Sky Conference play at home next week, hosting Eastern Washington on Friday (March 31) at 1 p.m., before welcoming Idaho on Saturday (April 1) at Noon.
