ABILENE, Texas -- Freshman Wehiwa Aloy finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a triple to help the Sacramento State baseball team jump out to an early lead, but host Abilene Christian quickly erased the deficit, scoring 10 times in the bottom of the third en route to a 20-5 win in seven innings on Sunday afternoon.
The loss dropped the Hornets to 12-11 overall and 2-4 in Western Athletic Conference play, losing their second conference series of the season. The Wildcats improved to 18-6 overall and took two out of three in the series to improve to 7-2 in conference.
After spotting Abilene Christian a run in the first, it looked like the Sacramento State offense had shaken off the doldrums that saw the Hornets limited to only three hits on Saturday, scoring three times in the second and another in the third to take a 4-1 lead.
Freshman JP Smith tied the game with his third home run of the season — a solo shot to lead off the second — and took the lead after a walk to Josh Rolling and a triple into the right centerfield gap by Jeffery Heard to make it 2-1. A ground ball by Cesar Valero tacked on a third run in the frame and another ground out by Martin Vincelli-Simard in the third have the Hornets a three-run, 4-1, advantage.
That would be the last time that Sacramento State would hold the lead as Abilene Christian went on to plate 10 runs in the home half of the third on 10 hits, sending 15 batters to plate in the process to take command. The Wildcats went on to add another run in the fourth, six more in the fifth, and two more in the six to cruise to the run-rule victory.
Smith finished the day 2-for-4 to go along with his home run, while Gunner Gouldsmith and Josh Rolling also finished with hits on the day.
The three hits for Aloy tied a career high and gave him his 11th multi-hit game of the season. Heard has also now reached base safely in each of his last 10 games with his triple, while Vincelli-Simard collected his team-high eighth multi-RBI game of the year with his two runs driven in.
Sacramento State remains on the road for its Spring Break road swing, taking on Louisiana Tech on Tuesday night (March 28) at 4 p.m., before a three-game series at Stephen F. Austin on March 30-April 1 in Nacogdoches, Texas.
