MEN’S TENNIS WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT; COMES FROM BEHIND TO BEAT SAINT MARY’S, 4-3

Box Score SACRAMENTO -- Trailing, 3-0, Sacramento State won four straight singles matches to defeat Saint Mary's, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon at the Sacramento State Tennis Courts.

The match began on Saturday, but was halted by rain with the Gaels leading, 3-2. The only two singles matches left were early in the third sets for both Adam Chodur at No. 3, and Rudolfs Aksenoks at No. 6. Both those matches resumed today.

Chodur and Aksenoks dominated their third sets, combining to drop just one game. Chodur's match resumed at 1-0 in the third set and he would defeat Caelan Potts, 6-1. Aksenoks started the day 2-2 in his third set, and won, 6-2, over Felipe Rincon.

The victory was the fifth straight for Sacramento State, which improved to 6-2 overall and 5-0 at home. In fact, the Hornets completed their five-match homestand with a perfect 5-0 record. Each of the Hornets' last three wins against the Gaels dating back to 2021 have resulted in 4-3 outcomes.

Saint Mary's won the doubles point (just the second time the Hornets have dropped the point this year) and picked up singles wins at both Nos. 5 and 2 to take a 3-0 lead. Sacramento State would storm back, getting wins by Mark Keki at No. 1 (6-3, 7-5), Ori Maior at No. 4 (6-4, 6-2), Aksenoks at No. 6 (4-6, 6-1, 6-2) and Chodur at No. 3 (6-7, 6-3, 6-1). Chodur provided the match clincher.

Today's singles win for Aksenoks was his fourth straight and he improved to 4-2.

"Both Adam and Rudy had a game plan heading into their third sets, and they executed," Sacramento State head coach Kevin Kurtz said. "Saint Mary's is a good team and they had us down early, 3-0. But our guys have a lot of fight, and we are very proud of this team win."

Sacramento State returns to action on Saturday when it travels to 16th-ranked Stanford. Match time is 1 p.m.
