SEATTLE — Sophomore Benthe Versteeg and freshman Summah Hanson shared team-high honors with eight points apiece, but the Sacramento State women's basketball team could not hold off the hot-shooting host Huskies as Washington posted a 76-28 victory over the Hornets on Monday night in the season opener for both teams at Alaska Airlines Arena.
Sacramento State fell to 0-1 overall on the year while the Huskies, who were receiving votes in the preseason Associated Press national rankings, improved to 1-0 in the first meeting between the two schools since 2009.
Versteeg added four rebounds, a pair of assists, and two steals in 33 minutes to her final stat line, while Hanson grabbed a team-high six rebounds and dished out a pair of assists in her collegiate debut. Monday night also saw the Division I debuts for eight of Sacramento State's nine newcomers, as freshmen Lina Falk, Paula Haw, and Sophia Lee all collected their first career points.
A three-point play by the Huskies opened the scoring before Versteeg collected the first points of the year for the Hornets on a slashing drive to the basket. A 6-0 run by Washington followed to stretch the lead to seven before senior Solape Amusan tallied her first points of the season on a three-pointer to cut the deficit to only four.
However, a 14-2 run by Washington to close out the period gave the Huskies a commanding 23-7 lead after one and they never looked back. The Hornets got no closer the rest of the way as they could not hold off a blistering shooting performance by Washington, which shot 46 percent from the field overall and 41 percent from three-point range en route to the win.
Elle Ladine finished with a game-high 20 points, while Ari Long came off the bench to add 10 more to lead a balanced attack for the Huskies.
Sacramento State returns home Tuesday and makes the short trip up I-80 to take on Nevada on Thursday (Nov. 9) at 6:30 p.m. That precedes a stretch of contests that will see the Hornets play eight of their next nine at The Nest, beginning on Sunday (Nov. 12) against Cal State Fullerton at 2 p.m.
