FARMINGTON, Utah — Eleven Sacramento State players were named to the all-Big Sky Conference football teams, it was announced today. The list was comprised of four first-team selections, two players on the second team and five honorable mention choices.
Tight end Marshel Martin earned his third first team selection in as many years. Martin joins running back Charles Roberts and wide receivers Fred Amey and
Pierre Williams as the only players in school history have three first team all-Big Sky accolades during their career. Despite being hampered by an injury for most of the year, Martin has 29 receptions for 265 yards and a pair of scores. He will leave Sacramento State ranked fifth in school history with 2,343 receiving yards, is fourth with 186 career receptions and tied for second with 27 career TD receptions. The Vallejo, Calif., native has caught at least one pass in 46 of 47 career games and enters the playoffs with 30 career touchdowns (27 receiving, two rushing, one kick return).
Jackson Slater was named to the all-Big Sky first team for the second consecutive season. Slater started all 11 regular season games at left guard and has helped a Hornet offensive line lead the way for an average of 174.4 rushing yards per game while surrendering only 14 sacks during the year.
Armon Bailey was also a repeat selection on the first team at linebacker. Bailey leads the team with 82 total tackles, including a team-best 5.5 tackles-for-loss. He has been credited with at least four tackles in every game that he has played in over the last two seasons and is currently ranked 14th in school history with 214 career tackles.
Safety
Cameron Broussard took home his first all-Big Sky honor to complete the Hornets' first team selections. Broussard ranks second on the team with 73 total tackles. He also added two interceptions, had five pass breakups and was credited with a quarterback hurry. The junior had at least three tackles in all 11 games and finished with double digit stops in two games. Broussard had 11 tackles in the win at Stanford and added a career high 12 stops at Northern Colorado.
Wide receiver
Jared Gipson and defensive tackle
Jett Stanley were named to the second team. Gipson caught 31 passes for 582 yards with three touchdowns. His average of 18.77 yards per catch leads the Big Sky and ranks 12th in the FCS this season. The junior has eclipsed 100 yards in two games, finishing with 108 against Northern Arizona and 154 against Cal Poly. He had five receptions in both of those games and matched that total at UC Davis.
Stanley was recognized for the third time in his career following a second team selection last season and an honorable mention in 2021. He has made a tackle in all 11 games this season and earned the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week award after a three-sack performance at Stanford. Stanley has 105 tackles in 44 career games, including 10 for loss and five sacks.
Running back
Marcus Fulcher and offensive lineman
Ivan Garza and
Nathan Mejia represent the offense on the honorable mention list. Fulcher leads the team with 486 rushing yards despite missing three full games and the majority of another. He averaged 5.0 yards per carry and scored five touchdowns. Fulcher's biggest game came against Cal Poly where he had 20 attempts for 121 yards to set career highs in both categories. He is currently ranked 19th in school history with 1,345 yards and is tied for 10th with 16 career rushing touchdowns. Fulcher, who was a third team all-Big Sky selection last year, owns 2,322 career all-purpose yards.
Garza and Mejia started all 11 regular season games. Garza started seven games at left tackle and four games at right tackle. Mejia was named all-Big Sky for the second straight year after starting all 11 games at center.
Dillon Juniel was the lone Sacramento State defensive player to earn honorable mention. Juniel leads the team with 13 passes defended this season. The senior also has an interception and recovered a fumble. Juniel has been credited with 47 tackles, including 1.5 for loss. He set a career high with 10 tackles against Cal Poly and had eight stops against Montana State.
Punter
Cal McGough followed his third team selection from 2022 with honorable mention this year. McGough has averaged 43.67 yards per punt and has landed 16 punts inside the 20-yard line with just two touchbacks. The sophomore had five punts of at least 50 yards with long of 62.
