SECOND-HALF STRIKE LIFTS VIKINGS OVER WOMEN’S SOCCER

SACRAMENTO — In a battle of Big Sky Conference unbeatens, visiting Portland State was able to find the back of the net off a corner kick midway through the second half on Sunday afternoon, lifting the Vikings to a 1-0 victory over Sacramento State at Hornet Soccer Field.

The loss ended the Hornets three-match unbeaten streak, moving them to 3-6-3 overall and 1-1-1 in league play. Portland State improved to 5-5-1 overall and moved atop the conference table with a 2-0-1 record.

A relatively even first half saw Sacramento State collect five of the eight shot attempts and three of the four corners in the period, but neither team could find the back of the net, heading into the locker room scoreless at the break.

After the half, the Hornets came out firing on all cylinders as Abigail Lopez, Ellie. Farber, and Ariana Scholten all had attempts early on, but it wasn't until the 73rd minute that either team was able to score.

The Vikings were able to earn a corner and Abi Hoffman's ball fell into a mess at the top if the six-yard box. Lost amongst the feet, it eventually came to Audrey Williams, who was able to poke it home through traffic and in for her first goal of the season and the lead.

Now chasing a goal, the Hornets had three attempts at an equalizer in the final 10 minutes, but all were off target.

Lopez finished with a match-high three attempts for the Hornets, which held a 12-8 lead in the shot column, but could manage just one on frame. Farber, Scholten, and Madelyn Dougherty also had a pair of shots each while goalkeeper Izzy Palmatier finished with four saves.

Sacramento State hosts Eastern Washington and Idaho in its final homestand of the season next weekend at Hornet Soccer Field, facing the Eagles on Friday (Oct. 6) at 3 p.m., before welcoming the Vandals on Sunday (Oct. 8) at 1 p.m.
