Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Sacramento State won the doubles point, received victories from
Mark Keki,
Mate Voros and
Ori Maior, and picked up a road win at UC Riverside (4-2) on Thursday afternoon.
The Hornets, who were playing their season opener, kick off the 2023 season with three road matches over a four-day span. They play at UC San Diego on Friday, and USC on Sunday.
Sacramento State won the doubles point in 19 of its 23 matches a year ago, and continued to dominate in doubles play today. That included Keki/Voros (6-2 at No. 1) and
Patrick Wong/
Hayden Rand (6-1 at No. 3) winning in quick fashion to earn the doubles point.
Sacramento State head coach
Kevin Kurtz used the following singles lineup - Keki at No. 1, Voros at No. 2,
Adam Chodur at No. 3, Maior at No. 4, Wong at No. 5 and Rand at No. 6. Each of those players are returners except for Chodur who is a true freshman and was playing his first collegiate match today.
Keki, a first team all-Big Sky Conference selection a year ago, won at No. 1 by a 6-1, 6-2 score. Voros stormed back from a 3-5 deficit in the second set (which included saving five set points) to beat his opponent at No. 2 by a 6-3, 7-5 score. Maior won at No. 4 (6-4, 6-2) to win the fourth and match-clinching point.
Chodur lost his match in three sets (3-6, 6-3, 6-3) and Rand lost, 7-6 (5), 6-4. Wong's match at No. 5 was stopped in the third set as the Hornets already had the necessary four points to clinch.
"It's always exciting to win the season opener, and get the year going on the right foot," Kurtz said. "Our guys were ready to go today, and myself and (assistant coach)
Mikus Losbergs are looking forward to seeing the team compete the rest of this road trip, and all season."
The Hornets' match tomorrow at UC San Diego will begin at 3 p.m.
