BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Senior Aubrey Goodwill's second career brace off a pair of first-half free kicks helped the Sacramento State women's soccer team forge a 2-2 draw with host CSU Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon in the Hornets' non-conference finale.
The draw moved Sacramento State to 0-6-3 overall on the year, scoring a goal for the first time since a 1-1 deadlock with UC Davis on Sept. 1 and finding the back of the net twice for the second time this season dating back to the team's match with Pacific on Aug. 21.
Goodwill's brace was the second of her career dating back to the pandemic-delayed spring 2020-21 season when she scored twice — the second of which serving as the "golden goal" in double overtime — in a 2-1 victory at Portland State on April 11, 2021.
Sacramento State was the first on the board in the ninth minute as Abigail Lopez was taken down near the top of the penalty area, giving the Hornets a free kick from about 25 yards out. Goodwill stepped over the ball and rocketed a shot to the upper part of the net for the 1-0 lead.
The Roadrunners answered with scores two minutes apart in the 16th and 18th minutes to take their first lead of the match, but Goodwill answered off another free kick in the 21st minute to tie the score at two apiece. Sitting to the right side of the penalty area, Goodwill connected on another right-footed shot that curved around the wall and into the top right corner out of the reach of the goalkeeper to knot the contest at two apiece.
Goodwill, who shares the team lead with three goals while taking over the top spot with seven points following Sunday's performance, now has nine career goals to go with her 14 assists for 32 career points. The three goals this season ties her single-season high set during that 2020-21 spring season when she finished with eight total points.
After a flurry of four goals in a 21-minute span, that proved to be it scoring-wise for the rest of the contest as neither team was able to dent the back of the net the rest of the way.
CSU Bakersfield held an 18-7 advantage in shots, but could only put three on frame to four for Sacramento State.
The Hornets now turn their attention to the start of Big Sky Conference play, which opens at home with a pair of contests next week. Sacramento State hosts defending conference tournament champion Montana on Friday (Sept. 23) at 3:30 p.m., before welcoming reigning regular season champ Northern Colorado on Sunday (Sept. 25) at 1 p.m.
