WOMEN’S SOCCER FALLS AT CALIFORNIA BAPTIST

Sacramento State hosts Washington, travels to CSU Bakersfield to close out non-conference play next week

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Ali Fuamatu-Ma'afala, Kalista Hardy, and Shaunee Egloria, all had shots on frame on Sunday afternoon, but the visiting Sacramento State women's soccer team was unable to dent the back of the net, falling to host California Baptist by a 2-0 score in Riverside, Calif.

The loss kept the Hornets out of the win column to start 2022, falling to 0-5-2 overall on the season. The Lancers, who scored a goal in each half on Sunday, improved to 3-1-2 overall after a wild 3-3 draw with cross-county rival UC Riverside earlier in the week.

CBU struck first in the 13th minute on a goal by Ari Coronado, her second of the season to the upper right corner from about 25 yards out, and capped off the match with an insurance goal in the 79th minute on Karley Weeks' third score of the year for the final 2-0 tally.

Hardy had the Hornets' first chance with just under 30 minutes remaining in the first, picking off a misclear and making a run down the right side. Her shot attempt from a sharp angle was knocked down by a Lancer defender and cleared away, keeping Sacramento State off the board.

Egloria's opportunity came in traffic in the 55th minute as her right-footed attempt was turned away thanks to a kick save by the Lancers' goalkeeper, while Fuamatu-Ma'afala's volley in traffic off a Jordan Goularte corner kick in the 72nd minute was denied on the doorstep, preserving the shutout.

Sacramento State comes home to host Washington on Thursday (Sept. 15) at 4 p.m., before making a return trip to Southern California to take on CSU Bakersfield on Sunday (Sept. 18) to close out non-conference play.
