POSITION PREVIEW: QUARTERBACKS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Leading up to the start of the 2022 season on Sept. 3 against Utah Tech, Hornetsports.com will have a break down of each position group. Single-game and season tickets are available for online purchase HERE.
  • A year ago Sacramento State entered the season with no clear cut candidate to take over the starting quarterback position. The team ended the season with not one, but two, starters in a multiple QB system which had never been utilized by head coach Troy Taylor.
  • Jake Dunniway and Asher O'Hara split the snaps during the season and each earned all-Big Sky honors. The two rotated throughout games and combined to throw for 3,475 yards and 19 touchdowns and rush for 713 yards and nine touchdowns.
  • Dunniway was named third team all-Big Sky as a quarterback. He played in all 12 games, earning the start in nine where he threw for 2,576 yards and 12 touchdowns. The senior's .632 completion percentage and 8.94 yards per pass placed him third in school single-season history while his pass efficiency of 148.6 ranked fourth in the Hornet record book. Dunniway had four 300-yard passing performances, including a career best 370 at Cal and 331 in the FCS Playoffs against South Dakota State. He was named the Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week after a 328 yard, two touchdown effort against NAU.
  • O'Hara was a unanimous first team all-Big Sky selection as an all-purpose player following his first season at Sacramento State. He led the team with 667 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns and also passed for 899 yards and seven touchdowns. O'Hara added to he resumé with two receptions for 16 yards, including a touchdown.  An electrifying playmaker, he had the most points on the team among non-kickers and accounted for a touchdown in 10 of the team's 12 games. Prior to joining the Hornets, O'Hara was a second team all-Conference-USA honoree at Middle Tennessee State.
  • The Hornets also feature two other quarterbacks who saw limited action last season. Kaiden Bennett returned to Northern California and competed in five games in 2021 where he completed both of his pass attempts and also rushed for 31 yards. The sophomore's journey to the Hornets began with a stellar prep career at Folsom HS which led to stops at both Boise State and Nevada before Sacramento State.
  • Dorian Hale debuted for the team in the FCS Playoff game against South Dakota State. Hale had an 8-yard rush and nearly found the end zone before being pushed out of bounds just in front of the goal line. Hale officially redshirted during the year and has four seasons of eligibility remaining.
