SOFTBALL COMPLETES CAPITAL CLASSIC WITH 5-0 RECORD AFTER WINS OVER UC DAVIS AND DIXIE STATE

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State's Marissa Bertuccio picked up wins in both games, and Lewa Day finished 6-for-8 with two doubles, two home runs and five RBIs to lead the Hornets to a pair of victories on the final day of the Capital Classic. The Hornets beat Dixie State, 7-1, before taking the nightcap over UC Davis, 3-2, in eight innings.

The Hornets conclude the three-day event with a perfect 5-0 record. This year's Capital Classic was a three-team round robin played at Shea Stadium and UC Davis' LaRue Field. The Hornets finished with a 3-0 record against Dixie State, and 2-0 against the Aggies. All games on Friday and today were played at Shea Stadium, Saturday's games were played at UC Davis' home field.

Sacramento State has won five straight, and eight of the last nine games while improving to 11-8 this season. Of the Hornets' five wins during the tournament, three came by a single run.

Bertuccio was remarkable today, and all weekend. The junior right-hander picked up wins in both games today with a complete-game victory over Dixie State and three innings of shutout relief against UC Davis. For the tournament, Bertuccio was nearly unhittable, going 4-0 with a 0.58 ERA and .190 opponents batting average. She struck out 29 batters (with just five walks) in 24.0 innings. Bertuccio has won seven straight decisions and improved to 7-1 this year with a 1.44 ERA and 5.3-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Day had a monster afternoon, clubbing two home runs in the win over Dixie State before providing the biggest hit of the afternoon. With the score tied at 2-2 in the eighth inning against the Aggies, Day's walkoff RBI-single to left scored pinch runner Kennedy Echols with the game-winning run. Day had six hits today, including two doubles, two home runs, a walk and five RBIs. She had 14 total bases.

In the win over Dixie State, Bertuccio threw seven strong innings, allowing a run and seven hits with a season-high tying nine strikeouts. Day hit a pair of homers, and Webb hit her team-high eighth round tripper of the season. Webb has now homered in five of her last seven games. The Hornets scored two in the second, one in the third, one in the fifth, and three more in the sixth.

The win over the Aggies saw the Hornets finish with 12 hits, but could push across just three runs. However, that was enough run support for the combination of Webb (5.0 ip) and Bertuccio (3.0 ip) who held the Aggies to four hits over eight innings. Day, Alexis Parish, Nikki Barboza and Rylee Gresham all had multiple-hit games.

Five Hornets hit better than .330 during the five-game tournament, comprised of Day (.444), Alexis Parish (.400), Samantha Parish (.375), Webb (.333) and Alondra Mejia (.333). Webb had three home runs over five games.

Playing its best softball of the season, Sacramento State will take part in a three-day tournament March 11-13 at a tournament co-hosted by Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State. The Hornets will play five times against the likes of Nebraska, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Iowa State and Boston. Sacramento State plays on Friday against both Nebraska (12 p.m.) and Cal State Fullerton (5 p.m.).
