GYMNASTICS TO HOLD SENIOR DAY ON SATURDAY AGAINST UC DAVIS

OPENING PASS

  • For the final time during the 2022 season, the Sacramento State gymnastics team will compete at The Nest when the team takes on UC Davis on Saturday, March 5, at 3 p.m.
  • Following the meet, the Hornets will recognize its five seniors who will appearing at home for the last time in their careers.
  • Sacramento State will close its regular season at Arizona on March 10 before competing in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships at UC Davis on March 19.
  • The Hornets have scored 193.625 or better in its last five meets. The team's NQS of 193.670 currently ranks 5th natonally and is fourth among MPSF teams.
  • Fans will need to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test along with their ticket for admission into the meet. Masks will also be required for all spectators.
  • The meet will be streamed via ESPN+. A subscription is required to view.

OPPONENT PREVIEW

  • UC Davis sits just outside the top 36 in the latest national rankings as the Aggies have an NQS of 195.415.
  • The team most recently set an MPSF record with a vault score of 49.300 on the way to totaling an impressive 196.000. However, San Jose State was slightly better as the Spartans scored a school record 196.625 for the narrow victory.
  • This is the fourth of five meets between the two teams this season. The Aggies have been victorious in the previous three with a pair of home wins and a victory at The Nest on Feb. 11. The teams will conclude this year's series at the MPSF Championships in Davis on Mar. 19.
  • Sacramento State leads the all-time series, 58-47.
  • John Lavallee is in his 16th season as the head coach at UC Davis. Lavallee has been named the MPSF Coach of the Year six times during that stretch.

THE LATEST ACTION

  • Sacramento State gymnasts combined for six top three finishes, including event wins from Emma Morgenthaler and Amber Koeth in a dual meet at Air Force last Friday night. The host Falcons earned the win with a total of 194.200 while the Hornets totaled 193.625.
  • Sacramento State opened on bars where it scored 48.375.  Morgenthaler opened the lineup with a 9.750 which tied her for third place along with Shaye Mathias. Amber Koeth was sixth overall with a 9.725.
  • The Hornets totaled 48.625 on vault while the Falcons scored 48.625 on bars in the second rotation. Morgenthaler continued her brilliant run in the event, scoring 9.825 to win the individual title. Grace Gilman was second with a 9.775 and Destiny Watley took sixth with a 9.700 from the top of the lineup.
  • The team moved to floor in the third rotation and produced a 48.450. The final four competitors in the lineup all scored between 9.700 and 9.800 led by Amber Koeth who tied for second place. Morgenthaler was fifth with a 9.775.
  • On beam, Koeth finished in a three-way tie for first place with a 9.800. Gilman was fourth overall after receiving a 9.750 and Peyton Gillen scored 9.725. Unfortunately, the team was forced to count a fall resulting in a team total of 48.175.
  • Morgenthaler was second in the all-around with a four-event score of 38.975. That mark placed her just behind Air Force's Genevieve Sabado who won the all-around at 39.025.

SENIOR SALUTE

  • Karissa Hoffman fought a series of injuries which kept her out of action until last week where she competed an exhibition on bars. Despite the setbacks, Karissa has dedicated herself to the team and the department serving as president of the student-athlete advisory committee as well as a social media coordinator for the team.
  • Amber Koeth will leave Sacramento State as one of the best on beam in school history. She has three 9.900s in the event and has become one of the leaders on the team this season on bars and floor.
  • Shaye Mathias was an all-arounder as a freshman in 2019 before a knee injury ended her season and kept her out of most of the 2020 campaign. She has returned this year on bars and beam and recent set a career high with a 9.900 on beam in the four-team meet at Stanford.
  • Destiny Watley competed in every meet as a freshman and has rarely been out of the lineup since. She added all-arounder to her resumé earlier this year and scored 9.8 in her career debut on beam in that same meet.

THIRD TIME'S THE CHARM

  • Emma Morgenthaler was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Freshman of the Week for the third time this season, it was announced on March 1.
  • Morgenthaler competed in a pair of meets last week for the Hornets. On Feb. 21 at Stanford and against BYU and Boise State, Morgenthaler matched her career high on both vault and beam en route to scoring 39.000 in the all-around. The freshman recorded her second 9.900 on vault in as many meets to place to place third at the meet. Her performance helped the Hornets score a season best 49.125 on the event as a team. She also scored 9.775 on beam.
  • At Air Force on Friday, Feb. 25, Morgenthaler continued her success on vault, finishing first in the event with a 9.825. She also tied for second on bars with a 9.750 and was fifth on floor (9.775). Her all-around total of 38.875 placed her second in the meet.
  • Morgenthaler is now fifth in the MPSF on vault with an NQS of 9.805 and fifth in the all-around with an NQS of 38.935.

NEWS AND NOTES

  • The Hornets have had Emma Morgenthaler and Destiny Watley compete as all-arounders the last three meets and might be close to adding another as Grace Gilman competed in three events and performed an exhibition on bars in the last two competitions. Gilman and fellow freshman Sarah Fitzgerald were both all-arounders in the season opener.
  • Amber Koeth is the MPSF leader on beam with an NQS of 9.860. Koeth has five scores of 9.850 or better this season. She is also the team NQS leader on bars (9.745).
