DAVIS, Calif. — Seniors Destiny Watley and Amber Koeth each placed second in individual events to lead the Sacramento State gymnastics team at the MPSF Championships on Saturday afternoon at UC Davis. The Hornets finished fourth in the team standings after scoring 192.975.
San Jose State, which entered the meet ranked 35th nationally, claimed the team title behind a score of 196.425. The Spartans also accounted for the individual winner in each event as well as the all-around. Madison Kirsch led the way on floor with a 9.875, Jada Mazury was first on bars (9.850), floor (9.925) and in the all-around (39.350); and Emma Milne won on beam (9.925).
Sacramento State opened the meet on floor where it scored 48.550. The team was paced by Koeth who scored 9.825 to tie for ninth. Emma Morgenthaler ranked second on the team with a 9.750 to tie for 17th while Grace Gilman was 21st with a 9.700.
On vault in the second rotation, the Hornets totaled 48.600. Morgenthaler anchored the lineup with a 9.800 to tie for fifth in the meet. Gilman tied for seventh with a 9.776 and Mary Won was 14th with a 9.700.
Following a bye in the third rotation, Sacramento State moved to bars where it scored 47.375 after being forced to count a fall. Watley provided the bright spot in the rotation with a 9.825 which tied her for second place and left her just a quarter-tenth out of the top spot. Morgenthaler ranked second on the team with a 9.725 to tie for 10th.
The team finished the meet on beam with a score of 48.450. Koeth was the final performer for the team and responded by recording her third 9.900 of the season to finish in second place overall. Peyton Gillen added a 9.700 to tie for 17th.
Morgenthaler was the team's lone all-arounder and finished in sixth place with a total of 38.950.
Koeth and Morgenthaler will now await the final national rankings to see if they qualify for an NCAA Regional as an event specialist on beam and vault, respectively. Depending on scores this weekend, Morgenthaler could also qualify as an all-arounder.
