DAY AND WEBB BOTH HOMER TWICE, BUT SOFTBALL DROPS 1-RUN DECISIONS TO NEBRASKA AND CAL STATE FULLERTON

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FULLERTON, Calif. -- Sacramento State's Lewa Day and Lexie Webb both had five hits and two home runs, but it was not enough as the Hornets dropped a pair of gut-wrenching one-run decisions to Nebraska (10-9) and Cal State Fullerton (3-2) on Friday at Anderson Family Field.

The two games marked the start of the three-day Louisville Slugger Invitational, a tournament co-hosted by Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State. Both games today were in Fullerton, before the Hornets play twice in Long Beach on Saturday, and back to Fullerton for a game on Sunday.

Sacramento State, which saw its five-game winning streak come to an end, could have easily won both games today. However, errors played a part in both losses as defense continues to be the Achilles heal of the Hornet arsenal. Sacramento State could not hold onto a 9-5 lead in the fifth inning (and 9-8 in the seventh) against Nebraska, and saw an error in the seventh inning come back to haunt as the Huskers ended the game on a walkoff two-run homer by Cam Ybarra.

With the score tied at 2-2 in the sixth inning against Cal State Fullerton, the Hornets had two throwing errors on the same play result in the Titans scoring what proved to be the game-winning run.

Sacramento State dropped to 11-10 with the losses, while Cal State Fullerton is now 15-9 and Nebraska 12-6.

Webb and Day continued their onslaught of opponent pitching. They each homered in both games today, and Webb, amazingly, has a home run in seven of the last nine games. Day has four home runs over the last four games. Webb, who also pitched well today against Cal State Fullerton, has a team-high 10 home runs, or one homer every 7.0 at-bats this season. Of the Hornets 16 combined hits over today's games, the potent pair provided 10 of those knocks.

In the loss to Nebraska, freshman Nikki Barboza was 2-for-3 with a three-run homer in the fourth inning. The homer was the first of her collegiate career, and she finished the game with two runs scored and three RBIs. The Hornets scored a single run in the first inning, and four in each of the fourth and fifth innings, but could not hold the lead against a strong Nebraska offense.

Against Fullerton, Day and Webb accounted for all four Hornet hits, including solo home runs in the third (from Day) and fifth (from Webb). The Titans scored once in the third, fourth and sixth innings. Webb was the tough-luck losing pitcher despite allowing just three runs (two earned) with one walk and five strikeouts over six innings.

Samantha Parish saw her nine-game hitting streak come to a close after going 0-for-4 against Cal State Fullerton.

The Hornets will play again tomorrow against Boston at 11:30 a.m. and Long Beach State at 2 p.m.
