MORGENTHALER, KOETH EACH PLACE SECOND FOR GYMNASTICS AT ARIZONA

TUCSON, Ariz. — Emma Morgenthaler finished in second place on vault and Amber Koeth was second on beam to lead the Sacramento State gymnastics team against Arizona on Thursday afternoon from the McKale Center. The host Wildcats scored 196.375 to win the team title while the Hornets finished at 192.475.

Sacramento State found itself in an early hole as the team counted a pair of falls on bars in the first rotation leading to a team score of 47.000. Koeth paced the Hornets with a 9.750 to finish in fifth place while Torri Tavenner scored 9.700 to place seventh. Arizona opened on vault with a 49.050 to build a quick two point lead and never turned back.

The Hornets' high score for the meet came on vault in the second rotation. Morgenthaler scored 9.850 to take sole possession of second place and was just behind Arizona's Jessica Castles who won the event with a 9.875. Sarah Fitzgerald tied for fifth at 9.775 and Tavenner scored 9.750 to place eighth.

Sacramento State scored 48.625 on floor in the third rotation. Koeth was second behind a 9.850 for the second consecutive week. Destiny Watley tied for fourth place with a 9.800 and Morgenthaler was eighth at 9.750.

The team concluded the meet on beam where it scored 48.125. Grace Gilman and Mary Won led the team with 9.725s to tie for seventh place.

Arizona's Malia Hargrove captured the all-around with a total of 39.150. Morgenthaler was second after scoring 38.875.

Sacramento State will next compete at the MPSF Championships at UC Davis on Saturday, March 19. The five-team meet will begin at 2 p.m. PT.
