WOMEN'S BASKETBALL NEVER TRAILS TO EARN ROAD WIN AT EWU, 67-58

Box Score

CHENEY, Wash. — The Sacramento State women's basketball team jumped out to a quick start and never looked back en route to a 67-58 win at Eastern Washington on Saturday afternoon. The Hornets led 22-9 after the first quarter and never trailed in the game while improving to 14-13 overall and 10-8 in the Big Sky Conference.

The Hornets were powered by 21 points from Isnelle Natabou who made 9-of-11 shots from the field and was 3-of-4 from the line. Natabou also pulled down a team-best eight rebounds. Lianna Tillman recorded a double-double with 18 points and a career-high tying 10 assists while Katie Peneueta returned to her red-hot three-point shooting making 4-of-8 from long range.

With the score tied 4-4 early in the first quarter, Sacramento State went on an 18-5 run to close out the period. Natabou was dominant in the period, making 5-of-6 shots while Tillman made three of her six attempts. As a team, the Hornets shot 66.7 percent (10-15) in the period and was 2-of-4 from three. Conversely, EWU was just 4-of-12 overall in the opening 10 minutes and did not make a three on two tries.

The Eagles, however, would not go away, outscoring Sacramento State, 23-15, in the second quarter to draw within five at the break. The Hornets got a boost from Peneueta who knocked down a pair of threes to start the third quarter and extend the lead to 11. EWU answered with a pair of threes of their own and eventually drew within four, 48-44, after a basket from Jacinta Buckley with 4:01 left in the period. That would prove to be as close as the Eagles would get as Natabou made a pair of free throws and Emily Enochs connected on a three with just over a minute left in the quarter.

The teams traded baskets for the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter with Sacramento State's advantage fluctuating between seven and 10 points. The Hornets put the game out of reach on a pair of free throws from Tillman and Jazzy Carrasco in the last two minutes.

Sacramento State finished the game shooting 42.6 percent (23-54), was 9-of-23 from three (39.1 percent) and an efficient 12-of-14 from the free-throw line (85.7 percent). Eastern Washington was 22-of-56 overall (39.3 percent), 7-of-22 from three (31.8 percent) and 7-of-11 (63.6 percent) from the line.

Buckley was the Eagles' leading scorer with 17 points while Jaydia Martin added 14 points.

Sacramento State returns home next week for its final two regular season games of the year. The Hornets play Montana State on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. before closing the regular season on Friday against Montana.
