SOFTBALL'S WINNING STREAK AT THREE GAMES AFTER WINS OVER SANTA CLARA AND CAL POLY

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Sacramento State improved its winning streak to three straight games after one-run victories over both Santa Clara and Cal Poly on the second day of the Silicon Valley Softball Classic.

The Hornets opened the day with a 5-4 eight-inning win at Santa Clara, prior to driving to San Jose and beating Cal Poly, 6-5. Sacramento (6-7 overall) improved to 3-1 at the three-day tournament, and will wrap up the event tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. at San Jose State.

After beginning the tournament with a loss to Utah State, the Hornets have rattled off wins over Santa Clara (twice) and Cal Poly. Sacramento State has feasted on Santa Clara this season as the Hornets are now 4-0 against the Broncos.

Some highlights from the day included homers from Amber Rodriguez, Lexie Webb and Lewa Day. For Rodriguez, the home run was the first of her collegiate career, and it came in the third inning against Santa Clara. Webb crushed a three-run blast in the first inning to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead over Cal Poly, and Day added a two-run shot in the fourth.

True freshman Caroline Evans earned her first collegiate win in the circle, throwing three innings of relief against Cal Poly. She gave up just four hits and one unearned run while walking none and striking out a batter. In addition, right-hander Marissa Bertuccio, who usually is a starter, came on in relief against Santa Clara to earn her first career save.

Second baseman Kennedy Echols' bat came alive as she combined for four hits today, to go with two runs scored, a triple and an RBI.

One of the biggest moments of the day came with the Santa Clara game tied in the top of the eighth and one out. With Samantha Parish at third base, freshman Nikki Barboza hit a sacrifice fly that proved to be the game winning run.

Parish would also come up huge in the bottom of the eighth after the left fielder threw out the potential tying run at the plate.
