STANFORD, Calif. — Behind the second best vault score in school history, the Sacramento State gymnastics team scored 193.325 in a four-team meet against Stanford, BYU and Boise State on Monday afternoon at Maples Pavilion. Boise State, which is ranked 23rd nationally, won the meet with a total of 197.000. No. 20 Stanford and No. 17 BYU tied for second with each scoring 196.575.
The high point of the meet for Sacramento State came on vault where the team scored 49.125 in the second rotation. That mark only trails the performance at the 2014 MPSF Championships where the team finished with a 49.150. Destiny Watley opened the rotation with a 9.775 to set her season high. Torri Tavenner followed with a career best 9.775. Sarah Fitzgerald and Grace Gilman also set career highs with scores of 9.825 and 9.850, respectively. The final vaulter was Emma Morgenthaler who completed the rotation with a 9.900 for the second consecutive meet. Morgenthaler now joins Rebecca Seebirt (six times) and Kalliah McCartney (two times) as the only Hornet gymnasts to score 9.9 or better multiple times in their career.
Sacramento State opened the meet on floor where it was led by a 9.700 from Amber Koeth on the way to a team total of 47.925.
Following vault, the team scored 47.650. Watley paced the team with a 9.750 while Koeth scored 9.725.
The Hornet wrapped up the meet on beam with a 48.625 for its third highest score on the event this year. Morgenthaler led off with a 9.775 and was followed by an identical score from Grace Gilman. Peyton Gillen and Shaye Mathias each scored career highs of 9.900 to help the team to a strong start. However, each of the final two gymnasts had a fall, forcing the team to count one in the rotation.
Morgenthaler tied for third in the all-around with a total of 39.000. Stanford's Brenna Neault took the all-around title after scoring 39.525.
Sacramento State will next compete at Air Force on Feb. 25. The team's previously met on Feb. 4 at The Nest where the Hornets rallied to down the Falcons, 194.225-194.000.
