Box Score SACRAMENTO -- A one-point game at halftime, Idaho State outscored Sacramento State in the second half, 37-27, on the way to a 67-56 victory over the Hornets on Saturday afternoon at the Nest.
Sacramento State led for nearly the entire first half, and held a 42-38 lead with three minutes left in the third quarter. However, Idaho State would immediately respond with a 20-4 run over the next nine minutes spanning the third and fourth quarters to go up, 58-46, with 6:39 to play. The Hornets sliced the lead to five points (58-53) with 3:55 to play, but would get no closer. That 12-point lead for Idaho State was also its largest advantage of the game.
Idaho State did a nice job on the glass, outrebounding the Hornets, 40-31. That included 13 offensive rebounds, which resulted in an 11-2 advantage in second chance points. The Bengals also outscored the Hornets, 14-7, in points off turnovers.
The loss dropped Sacramento State to 13-12 overall and 9-7 in the Big Sky Conference. The Hornets had won four straight and nine of 10 prior to losing to Weber State on Thursday and Idaho State this afternoon. Still, Sacramento State, in the midst of its biggest win turnaround (since last season) in school history, finds itself among the top six teams in the Big Sky with four regular season games left. The Big Sky Tournament will take place March 7-11 in Boise.
Idaho State remains in first place in the conference with a 17-9 overall record and 13-4 conference mark. The Hornets split the season series with the defending Big Sky champions, as SAC beat the Bengals in Pocatello on Jan. 27 by a 73-57 score.
Of the Hornets' four remaining regular season games, two will come on the road next week at Idaho and Eastern Washington, and two at home the following week vs. the Montana schools.
Both teams shot for similar percentages (ISU 40%, SAC 39%), but the Bengals, thanks in large part to crashing the offensive glass, converted on six more buckets. The Bengals were 6-for-19 from the 3-point line, the Hornets 7-of-24 from distance, and both teams made 11 free throws.
Three Hornets scored in double figures, led by Lianna Tillman's 16 points and three assists. The senior has now led, or tied for the team lead, in scoring in 10 straight games. Summer Menke had 12 points, six rebounds and four assists, and drew eight ISU fouls in 37 active minutes. Isnelle Natabou, who was in foul trouble early in the first quarter, finished with 11 points and eight rebounds. Jordan Olivares added eight points and three assists, and Katie Peneueta notched five points, seven rebounds and a pair of steals.
Sacramento State had just four points off the bench, including three points and two assists from Jazmin Carrasco.
The Hornets are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Moscow for a matchup at Idaho on Thursday at 6 p.m. Thursday's game will be the third leg of a stretch that will see the Vandals play five home games over a 10-day span.
