WOMEN'S BASKETBALL UPENDED AT HOME BY WEBER STATE

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Despite a career-high tying 29 points from Lianna Tillman, the Sacramento State women's basketball team was never able to get on track in a 62-52 loss to Weber State on Thursday at The Nest.

The loss snapped a streak in which the Hornets had won nine of their previous 10 games and dropped the team's overall record to 13-11 and its Big Sky mark to 9-6. The Wildcats improved to 9-16 overall and 5-11 in conference play while defeating Sacramento State for the second time this year.

The teams traded leads throughout the first quarter before the Hornets took an 11-9 lead with 14 seconds left in the period on a driving layup from Tillman to give her seven points in the quarter. Sacramento State held that lead for the first five minutes of the second quarter and went up, 19-16, after a three-pointer from Jazzy Carrasco with 4:55 left in the half.

That triple was matched by one from Weber State's Kori Pentzer who then gave the Wildcats their first lead of the quarter with another three on the next possession. WSU pushed that advantage to five only to have the Hornets respond with a traditional three-point play from Tillman as well as another single free throw in the final 35 seconds to go into halftime down 27-26.

The third quarter proved to be the game-breaker for Sacramento State as the team was outscored 17-9 in the period. The Hornets struggled mightily on the offensive end, making just 4-of-15 field goal attempts, including 1-of-5 from three. WSU scored the first 10 points of the quarter to make it 37-26 before Sacramento State began to chip away.

The team was able to trim the deficit to five on seven occasions but could never pull closer. After Tillman scored on a layup with 4:19 to play to make it 54-49, Weber State went on a 7-0 run in a little less than three minutes to put the game out of reach.

At first glance, the team statistics are fairly close. Weber State finished with one more made field goal than Sacramento State (23-22) and rebounds were even at 24. The big differences came from beyond the three-point line where the Wildcats made 6-of-10 compared to 3-of-16 from the Hornets and at the free-throw line where WSU was 10-18 while SAC was 5-of-11.

Tillman provided the bulk of the scoring as the graduate student posted her ninth straight game with over 20 points and her 11th in the last 12 games. Tillman had over half the team's points but also took over half its shots accounting for 29 of the team's 51 field goal attempts. Isnelle Natabou ranked second on the team with eight points and had her streak of 10 consecutive double -doubles snapped as she had a season-low three rebounds.

The Wildcats had three players in double figures led by 17 from Pentzer, 16 from Daryn Hickok and 13 from Emma Torbert.

Sacramento State will continue its homestand on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. when it welcomes Idaho State to The Nest.
