FRESQUES, RICHARDSON AGREE TO CONTRACT EXTENSIONS

Both coaches have played large roles in the Hornets' offensive success the last three seasons

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State assistant football coaches Bobby Fresques and Kris Richardson have each agreed to multi-year extensions, it was announced by head coach Andy Thompson today. Fresques will assume the role of offensive coordinator while also continuing to coach the Hornet quarterbacks. Richardson will remain as the team's assistant head coach and offensive line coach.

"Bobby and Kris remaining at Sacramento State is a huge benefit to our team," Thompson said. "Having competed against them in practice the last four years, I have seen first-hand how skilled they are as football coaches. That said, I have an even greater respect for them as people and look forward to continue working closely with them."

Both Fresques and Richardson played key roles in Sacramento State's record-setting offense since joining the staff in 2019. During the last three seasons, the Hornets have set program highs for points scores, points per game, highest scoring margin, first downs, touchdowns, field goals, rushing yards and passing yards. Those numbers led Sacramento State to a 30-8 overall record, including a 23-1 mark in Big Sky Conference games. The Hornets won at least a share of the Big Sky title and earned a bid to the NCAA FCS Playoffs each season.

"I'm grateful for this opportunity to continue what we have been doing," Fresques said. "We set the bar so high that it's going to be a challenge but the fact that I've been trusted to meet the challenge is awesome. All the success we have had the last four years is because we have worked so well as a staff. It's going to be a daunting task, but we will do it together."

Fresques mentored Kevin Thomson to an amazing season in 2019 where Thomson was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award. That season, he threw for 3,216 yards and 27 touchdowns and also rushed for 619 yards and 12 scores. His 39 touchdowns accounted for that season set the school record and helped him earn All-America honors and the Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year award.

Sacramento State returned to competition in 2021 and used a seldom-seen two-quarterback system which produced dynamic results. Jake Dunniway and Asher O'Hara combined for 3,475 yards and 19 touchdowns and rush for 713 yards and nine scores. Following the year, O'Hara was named first team all-conference as an all-purpose player and Dunniway was voted to the third team.

The pair returned this past season and produced 4,220 yards of total offense while accounting for 49 touchdowns. Sacramento State finished the season with a 12-1 overall record and went undefeated through conference play for the second straight season. O'Hara took home his second first team all-Big Sky all-purpose honor while Dunniway was named to the third team.

Fresques, who played quarterback at Sacramento State from 1990-92, has deep roots to the area. He has had coaching stints at Sacramento City College, Christian Brothers HS and Folsom HS. While at Folsom the team went 138-12 and won nine league titles, six Sac-Joaquin Section championships and three state crowns.

Richardson has guided the unsung members of the offense since his arrival. He has coached nine offensive linemen to all-Big Sky honors, including a trio of FCS All-Americans.

"I took the job at Sac State four years ago knowing that my heart belongs in Sacramento," Richardson said. "I'm doing what I was made to do which is to coach the offensive line. I'm excited to keep working with Andy who has become one of my best friends. He is the perfect hire and I'm ready to keep this thing rolling."

In 2019, center Wyatt Ming was named to the all-Big Sky first team and played in the Hula Bowl All-Star Game. That season, the team ranked among the top 10 in the FCS in sacks allowed per pass and rushed for 2,201 yards.

In 2021, Thomas Parker earned All-America and first team all-Big Sky honors at center while tackle Kooper Richardson and guard Brandon Weldon landed on the second team. Richardson mixed nine different starters across the line during the season but still managed to form a cohesive unit which averaged nearly five yards a carry.

Sacramento State set the school rushing record in 2022 and used the same starting lineup in all 11 regular season games. The Hornets compiled 3,163 rushing yards in 13 games and rushed for 36 touchdowns. Weldon and Jackson Slater each earned first team all-Big Sky accolades and were second and third team All-Americans by the Associated Press, respectively. Center Nathan Mejia earned second team all-league honors and was also recognized as a Freshman All-American by HERO Sports. Troy Stiefel rounded out the group by being named to the all-Big Sky second team.

Richardson made the jump to Sacramento State from Folsom HS where he was on staff for 24 years, including the final 14 as head coach. The Bulldogs posted a 162-27-1 overall record, won seven Sac-Joaquin Section Championships and four state crowns during his tenure.
