DUNN’S GOAL STANDS AS WOMEN’S SOCCER POSTS THIRD STRAIGHT SHUTOUT IN WIN OVER WEBER STATE

SACRAMENTO -- Jasmyne Dunn netted her second goal of the season off a pass from teammate Abigail Lopez in the 40th minute and the Sacramento State defense made it stand, posting its third consecutive shutout with a 1-0 victory over visiting Weber State on Friday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field.

The Hornets have now collected points in each of their last three Big Sky Conference matches after falling in their league opener, improving to 2-7-4 overall on the year and 2-1-1 in conference play. It was the first win in the series with the Wildcats since Oct. 21, 2016.

Friday's shutout also marked the first time that Sacramento State has blanked three consecutive opponents since the Hornets did so in four straight matches from Oct. 18-27, 2019, against Montana, Northern Colorado, Idaho, and Eastern Washington.

Weber State fell to 2-10 overall and 1-3 in the Big Sky with the defeat.

Entering the day, seven of the Hornets' eight goals on the year had come in the first half and Friday was no different as Dunn scored for the second time in the team's last three matches with just under six minutes to go in the opening period.

Lopez sent Dunn off down the right side with a pinpoint through ball as Dunn outraced a Wildcat defender, who lost her footing, to the ball. Taking it near the endline on a sprint, the Rio Linda, Calif., native found enough room around another Weber State defender just outside the six and rocketed a left foot to the upper left side for the 1-0 advantage.

That was more than enough for the Hornets as the defense took it from there. Goalkeeper Mia Shalit, who made a pair of stops a minute apart in the first 10 minutes of the contest, kept the Wildcats out of the net with a pair of big stops, tipping a curling corner by Sayler Schlosser off the crossbar and then just over the post with 12 minutes to go, and denying a header by Rachel Twede on the doorstep with less than a minute to play, punching it away at the right post.

Sacramento State's defense then limited Weber State to without a shot attempt for the first 27 minutes of the second half and Shalit made a pair of stops on Brynlee Meyerhoffer and Grace Kirby in the 73rd and 86th — coming off her line on the latter to cut down the angle and punch it over the net — minutes to complete the shutout.

Dunn led the Hornets with three shots on the afternoon, putting a pair of frame, while Meyerhoffer led all players with six attempts, helping Weber State to a 12-8 advantage in that category.

The home portion of the 2022 schedule comes to a close on Sunday (Oct. 9) at 1 p.m. as Sacramento State plays host to Idaho State. Prior to kick-off, the Hornets' senior class will be honored as part of "Senior Day" festivities beginning at approximately 12:30 p.m.
